สร้างขึ้นในพุทธศวรรตที่ 19 ประมาณปลายปี พ.ศ. 1934 มีความเก่าแก่ร่วมสมัยเดียวกันกับวัดเจดีย์หลวง สร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นบริวารล้อมรอบเขตพุทธาวาสของวัดเจดีย์หลวงซึ่งมีอยู่ด้วยกัน ๔ วัด ในทิศอันเป็นมงคลทั้ง 4 มุม แต่เดิมมีชื่อเรียกว่าวัดปันเต้า ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 1954 ได้มีการเททองหล่อพระอัฏฐารส พร้อมทั้งพระสาวกพระโมคคัลลานะ และ พระสารีบุตร ได้ใช้วัดปันเต้านี้ที่เททองสำริด ในการเททองนั้นจะต้องเทอย่างต่อเนื่อง เตาที่ใช้จึงมีถึงพันเตา แล้วพิธีเททองแล้วเสร็จในเวลาต่อมาจึงเรียกวัดนี้ว่าวัดพันเตา ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2101 เมืองเชียงใหม่ตกอยู่ใต้การยึดครองของพม่าเป็นเวลาถึง 216 ปี วัดต่างๆ จึงถูกปล่อยทิ้งร้าง ผู้คนในเมืองเชียงใหม่ถูกต้อนไปยังพม่า จึงกระทั่งกองทัพพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีส่งกำลังมาขับไล่พม่าออกไปได้สำเร็จจึงตั้งเจ้ากาวิละขึ้นเป็นเจ้าปกครองนครเชียงใหม่ วัดพันเตาจึงได้รับการบูรณะขึ้น ครั้งถึงสมัยพระเจ้าอินทวิชยานนท์เจ้าผู้ครองนครเชียงใหม่องค์ที่ ๗ ได้โปรดให้รื้อคุ้มหลวงของพระเจ้ามโหตรประเทศฯ เจ้าผู้ครองนครเชียงใหม่องค์ที่๕ สร้างเป็นวิหารถวายวัดพันเตาเป็นวิหารไม้สักทั้งหลัง นับว่าเป็นคุ้มหลวงที่เหลืออยู่เพียงหลังเดียวของล้านนาในปัจจุบัน
