อาข่า เป็นชนเผ่าที่สืบเชื้อสายมาจากไหนไม่ทราบแน่ชัด แต่มีชาวอาข่าอาศัยกระจัดกระจายอยู่ ในภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย, เชียงตุง, รัฐฉาน ของประเทศพม่า และทางแคว้นสิบสองปันนาทางตอนใต้ของจีน ภาษาอาข่าจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มภาษาจีน แต่ก็ไม่ใช่ภาษาจีนเสียทีเดียว อาข่าโดยส่วนมากจึงพูดได้หลายภาษาเพราะต้องอาศัยปะปนกับหลายชนเผ่า
