ที่ตั้งและอาณาเขต

อำเภอช้างกลางตั้งอยู่ทางตอนกลางค่อนไปทางทิศตะวันตกของจังหวัด มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับเขตการปกครองข้างเคียง ดังนี้

ทิศเหนือ ติดต่อกับอำเภอฉวางทิศตะวันออก ติดต่อกับอำเภอลานสกาทิศใต้ ติดต่อกับอำเภอทุ่งสงและอำเภอนาบอนทิศตะวันตก ติดต่อกับอำเภอฉวางประวัติอำเภอช้างกลาง จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช

ประวัติความเป็นมา

            •  กรมช้างกลาง ตั้งอยู่หมู่ที่ 5 ตำบลช้างกลาง เพื่อควบคุมช้างที่จับได้แถบป่าฉวาง ทุ่งใหญ่ นาบอน ทุ่งสง และกรมช้างกลางจะควบคุมพื้นที่ 4 หัวเมืองอันเป็นบริเวณยุทธศาสตร์ ด้านตะวันตกของเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช คือหัวเมืองพิปูน หัวเมืองกะเปียด หัวเมืองละอาย และหัวเมืองหลักช้างโดยกรมช้างกลางนี้ เป็นกลังหลักของกองทัพช้างของนครศรีธรรมราช มาเป็นเวลายาวนาน

            •  กรมช้างซ้าย ตั้งอยู่ตำบลช้างซ้าย ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตอำเภอพระพรหม สำหรับพักช้างที่ใช้ในตัวเมืองรักษาพระนคร

ประวัติการจัดตั้ง

              อำเภอช้างกลางเดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอำเภอฉวาง กระทรงมหาดไทยได้ประกาศลงวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2539 แบ่งพื้นที่การปกครองออกมาตั้งเป็น กิ่งอำเภอช้างกลาง โดยให้มีผลบังคับต้งแต่วันที่ 15 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2539 ในปีเดียวกัน และต่อมาในวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2550 ได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกายกฐานะขึ้นเป็น อำเภอช้างกลาง โดยมีผลบังคับตั้งแต่วันที่ 8 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2550 ในปีเดียวกัน

การแบ่งเขตการปกครองการปกครองส่วนภูมิภาค

อำเภอช้างกลางแบ่งเขตการปกครองย่อยออกเป็น 3 ตำบล 36 หมู่บ้าน ได้แก่
