วันสตรีไทย ถูกจัดตั้งขึ้นเพื่อเทิดพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ เนื่องในวันมหามงคล 12 สิงหาคม ซึ่งเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนม์พรรษาของพระองค์ ด้วยสำนึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณที่ทรงมีพระวิริยะอุตสาหะ ตรากตรำบำเพ็ญพระราชกรณียกิจเพื่อให้คนไทยได้มีอาชีพ และในปี 2546 สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้พระราชทานให้วันที่ 1 สิงหาคมของทุกปี เป็น "วันสตรีไทย" และพระราชทานพระราชานุญาตให้ใช้ "ดอกคัทลียา ควีนสิริกิติ์" เป็นดอกไม้สัญลักษณ์วันสตรีไทย
เมื่อวันที่ 1 สิงหาคม 2546 สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เสด็จพระราชดำเนินแทนพระองค์ทรงเปิดงานวันสตรีไทย ณ อาคารใหม่ สวนอัมพร พระราชวังดุสิต พร้อมทั้งมีพระราชดำรัส 4 ประการ เนื่องในวันสตรีไทย
ประการที่ 1 พึงทำหน้าที่ของแม่ให้สมบูรณ์
ประการที่ 2 พึงทำหน้าที่แม่บ้านให้ดี
ประการที่ 3 พึงรักษาเอกลักษณ์ของความเป็นสตรีไทย
ประการที่ 4 ฝึกฝนตนเองให้มีความรู้ความสามารถยิ่งขึ้น
หากสตรีไทยทุกคนตั้งใจปฏิบัติหน้าที่ ทั้ง 4 ประการ นี้ได้ ก็จะส่งผลให้ครอบครัวไทย สังคมไทย และประเทศชาติมีความสุข ความเจริญ นำไปสู่การพัฒนาด้านอื่น ๆ อย่างต่อเนื่อง และสตรีไทยจักเป็นที่ยกย่อง ชื่นชมของสังคมโลกตลอดไป
