วันพ่อเเห่งชาติได้จัดให้มีขึ้นครั้งเเรก เมื่อครั้งเเรกเมื่อวันที่5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2523 โดยคุณหญิงเนื้อทิพย์ เสมรสุต นายกสมาคมผู้อาสาสมัครเเละช่วยการศึกษาหลักการเเละเหตุผลที่มีการจัดตั้งวันพ่อเเห่งชาติขึ้น เนื่องจากพ่อเป็นบุคคลผู้มีพระคุณเเลพมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อครอบครัวเเละสังคมที่ผู้เป็นลูกจะเคารพเทิดทูนเเละตอบเเทนพระคุณด้วยความกตัญญู เเละสังคมควรที่จะยกย่องให้เกียรติรำลึกถึงผู้เป็นพ่อ จึงถือเอาวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปีเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุยเดชเป็น
