ประวัติ
สุทธิชัยเกิดในครอบครัวคนไทยเชื้อสายจีนที่ยากจน ในอำเภอหาดใหญ่ จังหวัดสงขลา มารดาชื่อ ฟุ่งซุ่ยจั่น แซ่ฟุ่ง เป็นพี่ชายของเทพชัย หย่อง กรรมการบริหารบริษัท เนชั่นมัลติมีเดียกรุ๊ป จำกัด (มหาชน) และอดีตผู้อำนวยการองค์การกระจายเสียงและแพร่ภาพสาธารณะแห่งประเทศไทย จบการเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษา จากโรงเรียนแสงทองวิทยา อำเภอหาดใหญ่ ต่อมาเข้าเรียนต่อชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ที่โรงเรียนอัสสัมชัญพาณิชยการ ในกรุงเทพมหานคร ระหว่างเรียนมีผลงานเขียน กับหนังสือพิมพ์บางกอกโพสต์ และสยามรัฐรายวัน หลังจากเรียนจบ เข้าทำงานที่บริษัท ดีทแฮล์ม จำกัด อยู่สามเดือน จึงเปลี่ยนมาเป็นล่าม ให้กับผู้เชี่ยวชาญชาวอเมริกัน ที่เข้ามาสร้างเขื่อนผามอง จังหวัดหนองคาย เสร็จจากงานชั่วคราวนี้ จึงเข้าศึกษาต่อที่ แผนกอิสระสื่อสารมวลชน ของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย (ปัจจุบันคือคณะนิเทศศาสตร์) ขณะเรียนก็เป็นพนักงานพิสูจน์อักษร ที่บางกอกโพสต์ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2511 แต่ก็เป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้เรียนไม่จบ เพราะเวลาเรียนกับเวลาทำงานตรงกัน จึงตัดสินใจเลือกทำงาน และต่อมา หลังจากทำงานได้เพียง 5 เดือน ก็เลื่อนขึ้นเป็นบรรณาธิการข่าวในประเทศ ทั้งที่อายุยังน้อย และไม่มีปริญญาบัตร[1]
จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2514 บางกอกโพสต์ซื้อกิจการหนังสือพิมพ์บางกอกเวิลด์ ซึ่งสุทธิชัยเห็นว่า เป็นการผูกขาดวงการหนังสือพิมพ์ภาษาอังกฤษ จึงร่วมกับหม่อมราชวงศ์หญิงสุนิดา กิติยากร, ธรรมนูญ มหาเปารยะ และเพื่อนนักหนังสือพิมพ์ โดยประกาศขายหุ้นแก่ประชาชนเพื่อระดมทุน จนได้เป็นเงินราว 2 ล้านบาท ในการก่อตั้งหนังสือพิมพ์รายวันภาษาอังกฤษฉบับแรก ที่มีคนไทยเป็นเจ้าของ ให้ชื่อว่า เดอะ วอยซ์ ออฟ เดอะ เนชั่น (อังกฤษ: The Voice of The Nation; คำแปล: เสียงแห่งประชาชาติ) ในวันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม ปีเดียวกัน ต่อมา เมื่อคณะปฏิรูปการปกครองแผ่นดิน ก่อรัฐประหารในวันที่ 6 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2519 ตามมาด้วยคำสั่งปิดหนังสือพิมพ์ในประเทศไทยทุกฉบับ สุทธิชัยจึงนำใบอนุญาตที่ตนเคยทำสำรองไว้ก่อนหน้านั้น ออกหนังสือพิมพ์ชื่อใหม่ว่า เดอะ เนชั่น รีวิว (อังกฤษ: The Nation Review) เมื่อวันที่ 8 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2519 จากนั้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2528 จึงเปลี่ยนเป็นชื่อที่ใช้มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
สุทธิชัยยังเป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง หนังสือพิมพ์ธุรกิจรายวันฉบับแรกของประเทศไทย คือกรุงเทพธุรกิจ เมื่อวันที่ 6 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2530 นอกจากนี้ ยังเป็นผู้ริเริ่มวิทยุเนชั่น และเป็นหนึ่งในคณะผู้ร่วมดำเนินงานสถานีโทรทัศน์ไอทีวี เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2538, ต่อมาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2543 จึงมาก่อตั้งสถานีโทรทัศน์เนชั่นแชนแนล ยุคต่อมา เขามีชื่อเสียงจากการเป็นคอลัมนิสต์ และผู้ดำเนินรายการสนทนาเชิงข่าว ที่มักต้อนผู้ร่วมรายการให้จนมุมได้บ่อยครั้ง โดยรายการที่สร้างชื่อคือ การรายงานข่าวสงครามอ่าวเปอร์เซีย ในช่วงต้นปี พ.ศ. 2534 ทางไทยทีวีสีช่อง 3 และช่อง 9 อ.ส.ม.ท. ต่อมาเครือเนชั่นจึงเริ่มผลิตรายการโทรทัศน์ครั้งแรก เนชั่น นิวส์ ทอล์ก ทางช่อง 9 อ.ส.ม.ท. ซึ่งทำให้เอกลักษณ์ของสุทธิชัย กลายเป็นที่รู้จักและจดจำของคนทั่วไป รวมทั้งนักแสดงตลก ก็มักนำไปล้อเลียนอยู่บ่อยครั้ง ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2545 พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร นายกรัฐมนตรีในขณะนั้น มอบหมายให้สำนักงานป้องกันและปราบปรามการฟอกเงิน (ปปง.) เข้าตรวจสอบบัญชีธนาคาร และการชำระภาษีย้อนหลัง ของสื่อมวลชนจำนวนหนึ่ง ซึ่งในจำนวนนั้น มีสุทธิชัยรวมอยู่ด้วย[2]
สุทธิชัยสมรสกับนันทวัน หยุ่น อดีตบรรณาธิการนิตยสารลลนา มีบุตรชายเป็นที่รู้จักคือ ปราบดา หยุ่น นักเขียนรางวัลซีไรต์ ประจำปี พ.ศ. 2545 และบุตรสาวคือ ชิมบุญ หยุ่น ทั้งนี้ สุทธิชัยตั้งชื่อบุตรชาย โดยล้อกับชื่อสำนักข่าวพราฝดา (Pravda) ของรัสเซีย และตั้งชื่อบุตรสาว โดยล้อกับคำว่าหนังสือพิมพ์ในภาษาญี่ปุ่นคือ Shimbun
