รศ.ดร. งามผ่อง คงคาทิพย์ ได้เริ่มทำวิจัยทางด้านสมุนไพรตั้งแต่ปี 2515 ซึ่งเป็นปีแรกที่ได้เข้ารับราชการในตำแหน่งอาจารย์มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ จากภูมิหลังของอาจารย์ที่คุณตาเป็นแพทย์แผนโบราณ คุณพ่อคุณแม่ เปิดร้านขายยาสมุนไพรไทย จึงทำให้อาจารย์รู้ถึงคุณค่าของสมุนไพรเป็นอย่างดี
