ท้องที่อำเภอพระพรหมเดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอำเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช กระทรวงมหาดไทยได้ประกาศเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2537 แบ่งพื้นที่การปกครองออกมาตั้งเป็น กิ่งอำเภอพระพรหม และต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2540 ได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกายกฐานะขึ้นเป็น อำเภอพระพรหม
