ความเป็นมา

ลูกฉุดเป็นกีฬาพื้นเมืองที่เล่นกันแทบทุกจังหวัดในจังหวัดทางภาคใต้ บางท้องถิ่น เรียกว่า อีฉุด หมากฉุด หรือเล่นฉุด (สมบูรณ์ ตะปินา และคณะ, ๒๕๒๕ : ๗๘) ก็มีคำว่า ฉุด หมายถึง หารเตะเบี้ยให้กระเด็นไป (พูนศิริ กนกวิจิตร, ๒๕๒๖ : ๑๓๔) เป็นกีฬาที่เด็กๆ ชาวใต้เล่นสืบทอดกันมานาน มีลักษณะการเล่นคล้ายตาเขย่งของภาคกลาง แต่มีรูปแบบของสนามและวิธีการเล่นที่แตกต่างกันอยู่บ้าง ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานมาเริ่มเล่นตั้งแต่เมื่อใด แต่จากหลักฐานพบว่าน่าจะมีการเล่นมาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ ๗ แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ก่อน พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๐ (ชัชชัย โกมารทัต และคณะ, ๒๕๒๗ : ๖๖๙) ปัจจุบันไม่นิยมเล่นกันแล้ว จะมีให้เห็นบ้างในแถบชนบท
