ในประเทศอังกฤษและสหรัฐอเมริกา ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2393 เป็นต้นมา มีการนิยมใช้ปืนยาวอัดลม (Rifle) เป็นอย่างมาก ปี พ.ศ. 2403 ในสหรัฐอเมริกาจัดให้มีการแข่งขันยิงปืน ณ สถานที่ต่างๆ ตามริมฝั่งมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก เช่น ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำมิสซิสซิปปี้ โดยสมาคมยิงปืนยาวอัดลมแห่งชาติ (The National Rifle Association) สมาคมแห่งนี้ได้สร้างกฎระเบียบในการกีฬาประเภทนี้คือ มาตรฐานของเป้า และระยะ เป็นต้น จากความไม่มีระเบียบ ไม่มีกฎเกณฑ์ที่แน่นอนมาสู่มาตรฐานจึงได้จัดให้มีการแข่งขันยิงปืนยาวอัดลมเพื่อชิงชนะเลิศระหว่างชาติ โดยใช้กฎอันเดียวกันเป็นครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2414 และได้ถูกจัดแข่งขันกันอย่างกว้างขวางในเวลาต่อมา

ประวัติยิงปืนในประเทศไทย
กีฬายิงปืนเป็นกีฬาที่ประชาชนคนไทยให้ความนิยมและสนใจเมื่อไม่นานนี้เอง ความจริงแล้วคนไทยรู้จักการใช้อาวุธปืนมาช้านานแล้ว และมีการแข่งขันกันแต่ไม่เป็นที่นิยมแพร่หลายมากนัก ต่อมาบรรดานักยิงปืนทั้งหลายได้เล็งเห็นว่าควรจะได้มีการแข่งขันยิงปืนตามแบบและกติกาและกติกาสากลนิยม จึงมีการจัดตั้งคณะกรรมการเพื่อจัดการแข่งขันยิงปืนขึ้นตามแบบและกติกาสากลนิยม จึงได้มีการจัดตั้งสมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย โดยจดทะเบียนก่อตั้งอย่างถูกต้อง เมื่อวันที่ 27 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2501

ภายหลังจากที่สมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นแล้ว สมาคมฯจึงได้คัดเลือกนักกีฬายิงปืนส่งเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันกับนานาชาติ เช่น การแข่งขันซีเกมส์ เอเชียนเกมส์ และโอลิมปิกเกมส์เป็นครั้งแรกในการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก ครั้งที่ 17 ณ กรุงโรม ประเทศอิตาลี ในปี พ.ศ. 2503

ในปี พ.ศ. 2501 สมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย จึงได้สมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ยิงปืนแห่งเอเชีย และสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ยิงปืนนานาชาติในปีเดียวกัน ซึ่งประเภทการแข่งขันยิงปืนตามแบบสหพันธ์ยิงปืนนานาชาติ ซึ่งจัดการแข่งขันในกีฬาโอลิมปิกมี 7 ประเภท คือ

1) ปืนยาวท่านอน
2) ปืนสั้นยิงช้า
3) เป้าบินประเภทแทร็ป
4) ปืนยาว 3 ท่า
5) เป้าเคลื่อนที่
