วอลเลย์บอล เป็นกีฬาที่เล่นโดยทีม 2 ทีมบนสนามที่แบ่งแดนด้วยตาข่าย
จุดมุ่งหมายของการแข่งขันก็คือ การส่งลูกข้ามตาข่ายให้ตกลงบนพื้นที่ในแดนของทีมตรงข้าม และป้องกันไม่ให้ทีมตรงข้ามส่งลูกข้ามตาข่ายมาตกบนพื้นที่ในเขตแดนของตน แต่ละทีมจะสัมผัสลูกบอลได้มากที่สุด 3 ครั้ง ในการส่งลูกบอลไปยังแดนของทีมตรงข้ามสัมผัสบอลแค่ครั้งเดียวก็ได้ โดยปกติแล้วการสัมผัสลูกบอลครั้งแรกก็คือ การรับลูก เสิร์ฟ จากฝ่ายตรงข้าม ครั้งที่ 2 คือ การ set บอลขึ้นบนอากาศ เพื่อให้ครั้งที่ 3 ซึ่งปกติจะใช้ตบลูกบอลทำได้อย่างสะดวก

การเล่นจะเริ่มต้นเมื่อทำการ เสิร์ฟ ลูกบอล โดยผู้เสิร์ฟ ส่งลูกบอลข้ามตาข่ายการเล่นจะดำเนินไปจนลูกบอลตกลงบนพื้นในเขตสนามหรือนอกเขตสนาม หรือทีมไม่สามารถส่งลูกกลับไปยังทีมตรงข้ามได้อย่างถูกต้องตามกติกา
