การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาศักยภาพทางการท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรมของชุมชนพะโคะ ตำบลชุมพล อำเภอสทิงพระ จังหวัดสงขลา และเพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรมของชุมชนพะโคะ ตำบลชุมพล อำเภอสทิงพระ จังหวัดสงขลา
วิธีการดำเนินการวิจัย การวิจัยในครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงปฏิบัติการ มีกลุ่มเป้าหมายผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องในชุมชนพะโคะ จำนวน ๕0 คน ใช้เครื่องมือในการวิจัย ได้แก่ แบบสอบถาม แบบสัมภาษณ์อย่างไม่เป็นทางการ มีการจัดเสวนากลุ่มย่อย และเวทีการประชุมเชิงปฏิบัติการ รวมทั้งมีการร่วมแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้ระหว่างกัน การแลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูลที่ได้จากการลงพื้นที่ชุมชน ซึ่งมีขั้นตอนการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล ได้แก่
1. ขั้นการสำรวจและศึกษาเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องโดยเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากแหล่งข้อมูลต่าง ๆ เพื่อใช้เป็นองค์ความรู้พื้นฐานและเป็นแนวทางในการศึกษาวิจัย
2. ขั้นการรวบรวมข้อมูลจากพื้นที่ภาคสนาม โดยใช้วิธีการสัมภาษณ์ลงแถบบันทึกเสียงหรือจดบันทึกตามความเหมาะสม การสังเกตวิถีชีวิตประจำวันในการสัมภาษณ์ และการจัดเวทีชุมชนเพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้สะท้อนข้อมูลให้ชุมชน
3. ขั้นการจัดกิจกรรมพัฒนาให้องค์ความรู้แก่ชุมชนตามความต้องการ
4. ขั้นการกระทำกับข้อมูล โดยการนำข้อมูลที่ได้จากการศึกษาเอกสารสรุปสาระสำคัญตามประเด็นที่กำหนดไว้ นำข้อมูลที่ได้จากการสัมภาษณ์สรุปสาระสำคัญตามประเด็นที่กำหนดไว้ และการตรวจสอบความสมบูรณ์ของข้อมูลเอกสารและจากการสัมภาษณ์ และเก็บข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมในส่วนที่ไม่สมบูรณ์ เพื่อให้เนื้อหามีความสมบูรณ์มากยิ่งขึ้น

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การศึกษาศักยภาพทางการท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรมของชุมชนพะโคะฯ มีศักยภาพ ๔ ด้าน คือ ๑) ศักยภาพด้านบริบทชุมชนหรือสังคม ได้แก่ ด้านประวัติความเป็นมา ลักษณะภูมิประเทศและสภาพพื้นที่ ๒) ศักยภาพด้านประเพณีวัฒนธรรม มีประเพณีที่สำคัญ ได้แก่ ประเพณีรับเทียมดาหรือการทำขวัญข้าว (เดือนเมษายน) ประเพณีสรงน้ำบูรพาจารย์ (เดือนเมษายน) ประเพณีรดน้ำดำหัวคนเฒ่าคนแก่ วันกตัญญู (เดือนเมษายน) ประเพณีทอดผ้าป่าสามัคคี ปิดทองหลวงปู่ทวดเหยียบน้ำทะเลจืด และห่มผ้าพระสุวรรณมาลิกเจดีย์ ศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ วัดพะโคะ (เดือนมกราคม) ประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบ (เดือนกันยายน) ประเพณีชักพระ/ตักบาตรเทโว (เดือนตุลาคม) ๓) ศักยภาพด้านประวัติศาสตร์โบราณคดี มีโบราณสถาน โบราณวัตถุ และแหล่งโบราณคดี เช่น วัดนางเหล้า เป็นวัดที่มีความโดดเด่น ด้านสถาปัตยกรรมหลากหลาย วัดพะโคะ เป็นวัดหลวงที่สร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยาตอนต้น ตั้งอยู่บนเขาพะโคะ เป็นวัดสำคัญและมีบทบาทสำคัญในสมัยที่เมืองพัทลุง (ที่สทิงพระ) เป็นศูนย์กลางการปกครองชุมชน ถ้ำคูหาเป็นโบราณสถานที่สำคัญในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ถ้ำคูหาอยู่ใกล้กับพังพระ เป็นถ้ำที่เกิดจากการขุดของมนุษย์ เพื่อใช้ทำพิธีกรรมทางศาสนา ๔) ศักยภาพด้านกลุ่มบุคคลหรือองค์กรชุมชน ได้แก่ กลุ่มสตรีสหกรณ์บ้านชุมพล หมู่ที่ 7 ตำบลชุมพล กลุ่มสตรีสหกรณ์บ้านคลองฉนวน หมู่ที่ 5 ตำบลชุมพล กลุ่มกองทุนเงินล้านของแต่ละหมู่บ้าน และกลุ่มคณะกรรมการการท่องเที่ยวฯ ตำบลชุมพล
นอกจากนี้แนวทางการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรมของชุมชนพะโคะฯ จากข้อมูลการสัมภาษณ์ การจัดเวทีแลกเปลี่ยนพูดคุย และการประชุมเชิงปฏิบัติการในชุมชนพบว่า
๑) ชุมชนมีความต้องการในการพัฒนาด้านการพัฒนาบุคลากรทางการท่องเที่ยว เช่น อบรมมัคคุเทศก์ท้องถิ่น/ยุวมัคคุเทศก์ อบรมการเป็นเจ้าบ้านที่ดี อบรมกลุ่มอาชีพเพื่อการแปรรูปผลผลิต รวมทั้งด้านการบริหารจัดการการท่องเที่ยวของชุมชน/การจัดโปรแกรมการท่องเที่ยว และการสร้างจิตสำนึกให้ผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องทุกภาคส่วน
๒) ชุมชนมีความต้องการให้มีการพัฒนาด้านโครงสร้างพื้นฐาน ได้แก่ พัฒนาเส้นทางการท่องเที่ยวตำบลชุมพล ให้มีศูนย์จัดแสดง/จำหน่ายสินค้าและผลิตภัณฑ์ประจำตำบล มีรถรางนำชมแหล่งท่องเที่ยวตำบลชุมพล ปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์ตามแหล่งท่องเที่ยวในตำบล สร้างเพจโปรโมทตำบลชุมพล เป็นต้น
