เกาะช้าง เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติมีเนื้อที่มากถึง 650 ตารางกิโลเมตร ประกอบด้วยเกาะมากถึง 52 เกาะ เรียงรายตั้งแต่เขตอำเภอแหลมงอบ อำเภอเมือง และอำเภอคลองใหญ่ เกาะที่สำคัญที่สุด คือ เกาะช้าง ซึ่ง มีประวัติที่น่าสนใจ รวมถึงสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวต่างๆ มากมายทั้งน้ำตก อ่าวต่างๆ และชายหาดที่สวยงาม นอกจากนี้ยังมีเกาะอื่นๆ ใกล้เคียงกันที่ยังคงสภาพความสวยงามตามธรรมชาติได้แก่ เกาะคลุ้ม ที่มีปลาอาศัยอยู่อย่างชุกชุม เกาะเหลายาใน เกาะง่าม เกาะไม้ซี้ใหญ่ เกาะหวาย เกาะรัง ฯลฯ ที่ทำการอุทยาน ฯ ตั้งอยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันออกของเกาะช้าง ใกล้คลองธารมะยม ที่ด้านหน้ามีท่าเทียบ เรือขนาดใหญ่ของอุทยาน ฯ นอกจากนี้ยังมีหน่วยพิทักษ์อุทยานฯ อีก 3 จุด ซึ่งอยู่บนเกาะช้างทั้งหมด คือ บริเวณอ่าวคลองสน บริเวณทางเข้าน้ำตกคลองพลู และบริเวณหมู่บ้านสลักเพช
