วัดพระธาตุหนองบัว เป็นวัดราษฎร์ นิกายธรรมยุต เป็น วัดสำคัญวัดหนึ่ง ของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ภายในวัดมีสถาปัตยกรรมที่น่าสนใจ คือพระธาตุเจดีย์ศรีมหาโพธิ์ ที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นสัญลักษณ์ครบรอบ 25 ศตวรรษของพุทธศาสนาในปี พ.ศ. 2500 พระธาตุเจดีย์ศรีมหาโพธิ์นั้น ได้จำลองแบบมาจากเจดีย์ที่พุทธคยา ประเทศอินเดีย เป็นสถานที่บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ รอบองค์พระธาตุเป็นกำแพงแก้ว ซึ่งทั้ง 4 มุม ของกำแพงแก้ว ได้ประดิษฐานพระเจดีย์ขนาดเล็กอีก 4 องค์ ภายในองค์พระธาตุมีประตูทางเข้าทั้ง 4 ด้าน พระธาตุองค์เดิมมีขนาดกว้างด้านละ 5 เมตร สูงประมาณ 17 เมตร เมื่อสร้างใหม่ครอบองค์เดิม คือพระบรมธาตุที่เห็นในปัจจุบัน มีขนาดใหญ่มาก ฐานสี่เหลี่ยมกว้างด้านละ 17 เมตร สูง 56 เมตร เสร็จสมบูรณ์ในปี 2512 ด้านหลังของพระบรมธาตุ เป็นที่ตั้งของศาลาการเปรียญ ซึ่งใช้ประกอบพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาและประเพณี กลุ่มของฆราวาสจะรวมกันอยู่ด้านหลัง ซึ่งเป็นกุฏิที่สร้างอยู่ในสภาพแวดล้อมธรรมชาติ ซึ่งเป็นป่าโปร่ง ส่วนกุฏิของแม่ชี จะแยกพื้นที่ไปอยู่นอกวัด
