ความคิดเห็นของผมนั้น เกี่ยวกับการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมาย คือ การศึกษาเหตุการณ์ในทางกฎหมายในเวลา และสถานการณ์ต่างๆกัน เพราะว่าการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายนั้นมีผลกระทบต่อการดำเนินชีวิตของคนหมู่มาก คล้ายกับประวัติศาสตร์ทั่วไปว่ามีเหตุการณ์ใดเกิดขึ้นมาบ้าง เกิดขึ้นเมื่อไหร่ เกิดขึ้นที่ไหน และผลของเหตุการณ์เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง และ ได้ค้นหาสาเหตุว่าทำไมจึงเกิดขึ้นเพื่อคาดเดาถึงแนวโน้มของอนาคตด้วย ประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายมีมาตั้งแต่นานมาแล้ว คือเหตุการณ์ในกฎหมายในเวลาและสถานที่ต่างๆ กัน แต่ไม่ใช่ทุกสิ่งที่เกี่ยวกับกฎหมาย แต่หมายถึงเหตุการณ์ที่มีผลกระทบทางกฎหมายในระดับสากล หรือ ภูมิภาคหรือในขอบเขตดินแดนใดดินแดนหนึ่ง เช่น กฎหมาย 12 โต๊ะ ของ อาณาจักรโรมัน เมื่อปี 450 ก่อนศริสตกาล ประมวลกฎหมายของจักรพรรดิจัสติเนียน เมื่อ ค.ศ. 528 หรือการก่อตัวของระบบกฎหมายคอมมอนลอว์ของอังกฤษ เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1066 โดยการศึกษานั้นเพื่อให้ทราบถึงผลกระทบของกฎหมายต่างๆในอดีต จะเห็นได้ว่ากฎหมายมีลักษณะคล้ายกับสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีการเติบโต และ ตายไปในที่สุด การศึกษากฎมายนั้นจำเป็นต้องได้ข้อมูลมาอย่างถูกต้องและครบถ้วน สำหรับข้อมูลทางกฎหมายนั้นได้มาจากแหล่งต่างๆ เช่น ศิลาจารึก เอกสารกฎหมาย หนังสือที่มีเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับกฎหมาย เพราะฉะนั้นการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายจึงจำเป็นอย่างมากสำหรับนักฎหมายทุกคน เพราะการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์นั้นทำให้เข้าใจกฎหมายได้อย่างลึกซึ้ง ทำให้เข้าใจในวิวัฒนาการของกฎหมายได้มากขึ้นกว่าเดิม บางครั้งบทบัญญัติของกฎหมายก็ต้องอาศัยประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายมาอธิบายที่มาของบทบัญญัติกฎหมายนั้นจึงจะเข้าใจถึงเหตุผลของกฎหมาย และได้ทำให้เราทราบถึงที่มาของกฎหมายต่างๆ เช่น ประมวลกฎหมายแพ่งและพาณิชย์ของไทย ได้แบ่งทรัพย์ออกเป็น2ส่วน ได้แก่ ทรัพย์มีรูปร่างและทรัพย์ไม่มีรูปร่างตามแบบอย่างของกฎหมายโรมัน เพื่อทำให้เราได้ทราบถึงเจตนารมณ์แห่งกฎหมายและขอบเขตของกฎหมาย เพราะจะทำให้เราสามารถใช้กฎหมายได้อย่างถูกต้อง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเมื่อตีความกฎหมายตามลายลักษณ์อักษร อีกทั้งการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายยังช่วยให้เราทราบถึงที่มาของรูปแบบการปกครองของประเทศต่างๆ ตลอดจนความเชื่อมั่นและความมุ่งมั่นในการพัฒนาประเทศ และสิ่งที่ผู้คนในอดีตได้คิดแก้ไขปัญหาต่างๆของสังคมในเวลาและสถานที่ ที่แตกต่างกัน ประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายนับว่าเป็นอารยธรรมของโลก การศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์กฎหมายย่อมทำให้เราได้ศึกษาอารยธรรมของโลกไปโดยปริยาย
