เทคโนโลยี (Technology) คือ การใช้ความรู้ เครื่องมือ ความคิด หลักการ เทคนิค ความรู้ ระเบียบวิธี กระบวนการตลอดจน ผลงานทางวิทยาศาสตร์ทั้งสิ่งประดิษฐ์และวิธีการ มาประยุกต์ใช้ในระบบงานเพื่อช่วยให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงในการทำงานให้ดียิ่ง ขึ้นและเพื่อเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพและประสิทธิผลของงานให้มีมากยิ่งขึ้น

1.ประสิทธิภาพ (Efficiency) เทคโนโลยีจะช่วยให้การทำงานบรรลุผลตามเป้าหมายได้ เที่ยงตรงและรวดเร็ว
2.ประสิทธิผล (Productivity) เกิดผลผลิตเต็มที่ ได้ประสิทธิผลสูงสุด
3.ประหยัด (Economy) ประหยัดทั้งเวลาและแรงงาน ลงทุนน้อยแต่ได้ผลมาก
ความสำคัญของเทคโนโลยี
1.เป็นพื้นฐานปัจจัยจำเป็นในการดำเนินชีวิตของมนุษย์

เทคโนโลยี มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงหรือพัฒนาเมื่อเวลาผ่านไปขั้นตอนการเปลี่ยนนแปลงขึ้นอยู่กับกระบวนการทางวิวัฒนาการ (Evolution) ของระบบหรือเครื่องมือนั้นๆ ดังนั้นคำว่าวิวัฒนาการของเทคโนโลยี (Evolution of Technology) จึงหมายถึง ความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นในระบบหรือเครื่องมือที่เกิดขึ้นอย่างซับซ้อนและมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามลำดับอย่างต่อเนื่องอันมีสาเหตุมาจากปัจจัยต่างๆ
วิวัฒนาการสามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 5 ยุค

2.ความหมายของการสื่อสาร
การสื่อสาร มีความหมายเช่นเดียวกับคำว่า การสื่อความหมาย ในภาษาอังกฤษใช้คำว่า Communication ซึ่งรากศัพท์มาจากภาษาลาตินว่า Communis หมายถึง การร่วม (Common) เมื่อมีการสื่อสารหรือการสื่อความหมาย ก็หมายถึงว่า มีการกระทำร่วมกันในบางสิ่งบางอย่าง นั่นคือการถ่ายทอดหรือการแลกเปลี่ยนข่าวสาร ความรู้ ความคิด ของคนเรานั่นเอง(Webster Dictionary 1978 : 98)
การให้ความหมายของการสื่อสารตามรูปคำข้างต้น ยังไม่ใช่ความหมายที่สมบูรณ์นัก เพราะการสื่อสารที่แท้จริงนั้น มีความหมายกว้าง ครอบคลุมเกี่ยวข้องกับชีวิตและสังคมมนุษย์ในทุกๆ เรื่อง นักวิชาการด้านการสื่อสารได้ให้ความหมายไว้ต่างๆ กัน ตามแง่มุมที่แต่ละคนพิจารณาให้ความสำคัญ ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้ (ปรมะ สตะเวทิน 2529 : 5-7)

เจอร์เกน รอย และเกกอรี เบทสัน (Jurgen Ruesch and Gregory Bateson)ให้ความหมายโดยสรุปว่า การสื่อสารไม่ใช่การถ่ายทอดข่าวสารด้วยภาษาพูดและเขียนโดยมีเจตนาชัดเจนเท่านั้น แต่หมายถึงพฤติกรรมทุกอย่างที่บุคคลหนึ่งกระทำ แล้วส่งผลให้บุคคลอื่นเกิดความเข้าใจ
