พระราชกรณียกิจในพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่ด้านต่างๆ, ศาสนา
“ศาสนา” เป็นหนึ่งในสามสถาบันหลักที่ชาวไทยยึดถือ คือ ชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ พระมหากษัตริย์ทรงเป็นพุทธมามกะ ทรงเป็นอัครศาสนูปถัมภก และทรงดำรงอยู่ในทศพิธราชธรรม พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงยึดมั่นในพระพุทธศาสนาทรงสวดมนต์ ทรงตักบาตร และทรงสดับพระธรรมเทศนาเมื่อจะเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไป ทรงศึกษาต่อที่ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ได้ทรงแสดงพระองค์เป็นพุทธมามกะ และเมื่อเสด็จนิวัตประเทศไทยเป็นการถาวรแล้ว มีพระราชศรัทธาทรงพระผนวชเป็นพระภิกษุตามประเพณีของไทยทางพุทธศาสนา ตลอดเวลา ๑๕ วันที่ทรงพระผนวช ได้ทรงประกอบศาสนกิจตามพระวินัยสงฆ์อย่างเคร่งครัด ทรงบำเพ็ญพระราชกุศลในวันสำคัญทางพระพุทธศาสนาโดยสม่ำเสมอ ทรงนำข้อธรรมะมาเป็นหลัก ในการพระราชทานพระบรมราโชวาท ทรงอุปถัมภ์เกื้อกูลศาสนบุคคล ศาสนพิธี และศาสนวัตถุมาโดยตลอด เช่น พระราชทานพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์แก่สามเณรที่สอบไล่ได้เปรียญธรรม ๙ ประโยคในการอุปสมบทเป็นพระภิกษุนาคหลวง ทรงสถาปนาพระราชาคณะ พระราชทานพระสมณศักดิ์ ทรงถวายผ้าพระกฐิน และพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ในการก่อสร้างและบำรุงรักษาวัดวาอาราม ทรงสร้างพระพุทธรูปในโอกาสต่างๆ ได้แก่ พระพุทธปฏิมาชัยวัฒน์ ประจำรัชกาล พระพุทธรูปภ.ป.ร. พระพุทธนวราชบพิตรพระพิมพ์จิตรลดาและพระพุทธนิรโรคันตรายชัยวัฒน์จตุรทิศ
ในการปลูกฝังธรรมะแก่ราษฎร พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์เรื่อง “พระมหาชนก” พระราชทานเป็นธรรมะแก่ราษฎรให้มีความเพียร ด้วยความอดทนโดยไม่ท้อแท้จนกว่าจะประสบความสำเร็จโดยไม่หวังผลตอบแทน และทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พิมพ์ในโอกาสเฉลิมฉลองพระราชาพิธีกาญจนาภิเษก ต่อมากระทรวงศึกษาธิการได้ขอพระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตพิมพ์เป็นหนังสืออ่านสำหรับเยาวชน
นอกจากจะทรงศึกษาและทรงปฏิบัติตามหลักธรรมอย่างสม่ำเสมอแล้วยังทรงเผยแผ่แก่ราษฎรเพื่อเป็นหลักยึดทางจิตใจและการดำเนินชีวิต ในโอกาสฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๖๐ ปี ได้เสด็จออกมหาสมาคม ณ สีหบัญชรพระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม เมื่อวันที่ ๙ มิถุนายน พุทธศักราช ๒๕๔๙ ได้พระราชทานพระราชดำรัสแก่ผู้เข้าฝ้าทูลละอองธุลีพระบาทในเรื่องคุณธรรมอันเป็นที่ตั้งของความรักความสามัคคีที่จะทำให้คนไทยร่วมมือร่วมใจกันรักษาและพัฒนาชาติบ้านเมืองให้เจริญรุ่งเรืองสืบต่อกันไปได้ตลอดรอดฝั่ง ๔ ประการ คือ
“ประการที่ ๑ การที่ทุกคนคิด พูด ทำ ด้วยความเมตตา มุ่งดี มุ่งเจริญต่อกัน
ประการที่ ๒ การที่แต่ละคนต่างช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลกัน ประสานงานประสานประโยชน์กัน ให้งานที่ทำสำเร็จผล ทั้งแก่ตน แก่ผู้อื่น และประเทศชาติ
ประการที่ ๓ การที่ทุกคนปฏิบัติตนอยู่ในความสุจริต ในกฎกติกาและในระเบียบแบบแผนโดยเท่าเทียมเสมอกัน
ประการที่ ๔ การที่ต่างคนต่างพยายามนำความคิดความเห็นของตนให้ถูกต้องเที่ยงตรงและมั่นคงอยู่ในเหตุในผล หากความคิดจิตใจและประพฤติปฏิบัติที่ลงรอยเดียวกันในทางที่ดีที่เจริญนี้ยังมีพร้อมมูลอยู่ภายในกายในใจของคนไทย ก็มั่นใจได้ว่าประเทศไทยจะดำรงมั่นคงอยู่ตลอดไปได้
ในฐานะอัครศาสนูปถัมภก พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์แก่ศาสนาต่างๆ ที่ประชาชนนับถือโดยทั่วถึง ได้แก่
ศาสนาคริสต์ สร้างโรงเรียน สร้างโรงพยาบาล สร้างโบสถ์และประกอบศาสนกิจได้ทั่วทุกภาคของประเทศ เมื่อเอกอัครสมณทูต ณ แห่งนครรัฐวาติกันเดินทางมาประเทศไทย ก็ได้รับพระบรมราชวโรกาสให้เข้าเฝ้าฯ ทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายพระราชสาสน์ตราตั้ง เมื่อวันที่ ๑๖ ตุลาคม พุทธศักราช ๒๕๑๒ ณ พระที่นั่งจักรีมหาปราสาท และเมื่อพระสันตปาปา จอห์น ปอล ที่ ๒ ประมุขแห่งคริสตจักรโรมันคาธอลิก เสด็จเยือนประเทศไทยอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ ๑๐ - ๑๑ พฤษภาคม พุทธศักราช ๒๕๒๗ เสด็จออกทรงรับ ณพระที่นั่งจักรีมหาปราสาทอย่าง สมพระเกียรติ สร้างความปลาบปลื้มอิ่มเอมใจแก่ชาวไทยที่นับถือคริสตศาสนาเป็นอันมาก
ศาสนาอิสลาม มีมัสยิดอยู่ทั่วทุกภาคของประเทศ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงห่วงใยประชาชนในภาคใต้ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่นับถือศาสนาอิสลามและพูดภาษายาวี ได้มีพระราชดำรัสแก่ทางการศึกษาให้พยายามจัดให้ประชาชนสามารถพูดภาษาไทยให้ได้และให้กระทรวงศึกษาธิการช่วยส่งเสริมให้โรงเรียนเอกชนสอนศาสนาอิศลามสอนวิชาสามัญและวิชาชีพ ได้ทรงติดตามผลโดยพระราชทานรางวัลแก่ครูโรงเรียนสอนศาสนาอิสลามที่ปรับปรุงดำเนินกิจการตามพระราชดำริ และเพื่อให้คนไทยที่นับถือศาสนาอิสลามมีความรู้ในสาระของคัมภีร์กุรอ่านซึ่งเป็นภาษาอาหรับได้มีพระมหากรุณาธิคุณโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จุฬาราชมนตรีจัดแปลคัมภีร์กุรอ่านเป็นเป็นภาษาไทยและพระราชทานเงินในการจัดพิมพ์ในการเสด็จพระราชดำเนิน เยี่ยมชาวไทยมุสลิมภาคใต้ ได้พระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์สมทบทุนสร้างหรือบูรณะมัสยิดเสด็จเยี่ยม ในวันสำคัญทางศาสนาอิสลาม เช่นการเฉลิมฉลอง๑๔ ศตวรรษแห่งคัมภีร์กุรอ่าน การจัดงานเมาลิดกลาง ได้เสด็จฯ ไปเป็นประธานพิธีเปิดงานและต่อมาทรงพระมหากรุณาธิคุณโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ สยามมกุฎราชกุมารเสด็จฯ แทนพระองค์
ศาสนาพราหมณ์ ฮินดู มีอยู่ในเมืองไทยมาช้านาน ได้พระราชทานฐานันดรศักดิ์แก่พราหมณ์ เมื่อมีพระราชพิธีตามโบราณราชประเพณีได้โปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมพิธีพราหมณ์ควบคู่กับพิธีทางพุทธศาสนาเสมอ และให้พระราชพิธีฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๖๐ ปี ซึ่งมีพระราชพิธีบวงสรวงสมเด็จพระบูรพมหากษัตริยาธิราช ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระราชครูวามเทพมุนี อ่านประกาศบวงสรวง ทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายน้ำเทพมนต์และอื่นๆ ตามพิธีพราหมณ์ สถานที่อันเกี่ยวเนื่องกับศาสนาฮินดูได้รับการบำรุงรักษาเป็นอย่างดี เช่น โบสถ์พราหมณ์ เมื่อสมาคมฮินดูสมาธแห่งประเทศไทยสร้าง “เทพมณเทียร” เพื่อเป็นศูนย์รวมของศาสนาพราหมณ์ ฮินดู ในประเทศไทย พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเป็นประธานพิธีเปิด
ศาสนาซิกข์ ชาวไทยผู้นับถือศาสนาซิกข์ส่วนใหญ่ประกอบอาชีพค้าขาย ได้ดำเนินชีวิตเช่นเดียวกับผู้นับถือศาสนาอื่นๆ สามารถบำเพ็ญศาสนกิจได้โดยเสรี เมื่อวันครบรอบ ๕๐๐ ปีแห่งศาสนาซิกข์ ผู้นับถือศาสนาซิกข์ในประเทศไทยจัดงานฉลองพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพร
