วัตถุประสงค์ของงานวิจัยนี้คือค้นหาเทคนิคการประมวลผลภาพที่ใช้ในการระบุขอบภาพ และเทคนิคการประมวลผลภาพด้วยขอบจะถูกนำมาใช้ในงานวิจัย โดยมีเทคนิคที่ใช้ทำการทดลอง มี 5 เทคนิคคือ : Sobel Method, Roberts Method, Prewitt Method, Canny Method และ Laplacian of Gaussian Method เทคนิคดังกล่าวถูกทดลองบนภาพดอกกล้วยไม้รองเท้านารี 14 สายพันธุ์ สายพันธุ์ละ 20 ภาพ โดยแต่ละสายพันธุ์จะใช้นามสกุลไฟล์ทั้งหมด 4 แบบ ในการทดสอบ คือ Joint Photographic Experts Group (.JPEG), Portable Network Graphics (.PNG), Graphics Interchange Format (.GIF), Bitmap (.BMP) รวมทั้งหมด 1120 ภาพ ซึ่งแต่ละภาพได้รับการประมวลผลบนโปรแกรม MATHLAB R2008B เพื่อเปรียบเทียบค่าพลังงานของภาพ (Image Energy) ซึ่งแสดงออกมาในรูปแบบของ Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) ในการเปรียบเทียบผลปรากฏว่า Canny Method เป็นอัลกอริทึมที่เหมาะสมมากที่สุด เนื่องจากภาพที่มีการประยุกต์ใช้ Canny Method มีค่าของ RMSE น้อยกว่าอัลกอริทึมอื่นๆ
