ต่อมาภายหลังจึงได้ย้ายไปเก็บรักษาและจัดแสดงชั่วคราว ณ อาคารสำนักงานศึกษาธิการจังหวัดสุรินทร์ เมื่อพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ สุรินทร์ ได้รับมอบโบราณวัตถุ ศิลปวัตถุเพิ่มมากขึ้น ทั้งจากประชาชน และจากการดำเนินงานทางโบราณคดี ทำให้สถานที่จัดแสดงซึ่งอาศัยใช้พื้นที่ปีกด้านล่างของอาคารสำนักงานศึกษาธิการจังหวัดสุรินทร์คับแคบ ไม่เหมาะสมต่อการให้บริการ ประกอบกับในปี พ.ศ.2535 กรมศิลปากรมีนโยบายที่จะปรับปรุงและจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติประจำเมืองให้ครอบคลุมทั่วประเทศ พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ สุรินทร์ จึงเป็นพิพิธภัณฑสถานอันดับต้นๆ ที่ได้รับการพิจารณาจัดตั้งขึ้นภายใต้นโยบายดังกล่าว
กรมศิลปากรได้ดำเนินการขอใช้ที่ดินราชพัสดุจากกรมธนารักษ์ บริเวณ กม.ที่ 4 ริมถนน สุรินทร์ – ช่องจอม เพื่อใช้เป็นสถานที่ก่อสร้างพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ สุรินทร์ แห่งใหม่ และได้เริ่มดำเนินการปรับปรุงสถานที่พร้อมทั้งก่อสร้างอาคารตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.2539 เป็นต้นมา
อาคารจัดแสดงพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ สุรินทร์ เป็นอาคารที่ได้รับการออกแบบขึ้นใหม่ รูปทรงทันสมัย โดยประยุกต์มาจาก “ปราสาท” สถาปัตยกรรมในศิลปะเขมร มีลักษณะเป็นกลุ่มอาคารที่เชื่อมต่อถึงกัน แบ่งออกเป็น 4 ส่วน คือ ส่วนที่ 1 เป็นโถงทางเข้าและทางเดิน ส่วนที่ 2 เป็นส่วนบริการการศึกษาและสำนักงาน ส่วนที่ 3 เป็นอาคารจัดแสดงนิทรรศการถาวร และส่วนที่ 4 เป็นคลังพิพิธภัณฑ์
