มีตำนานและเรื่องเล่าหลายเรื่องทั้งที่เป็นบันทึกและจากคำบอกเล่าถึงชื่อของเมืองสงขลาหลายประการด้วยกัน ซึ่งพอจะแจกแจงตามเอกสารที่มาได้ดังนี้
