            ทวีปอเมริกาใต้มีประชากรประมาณร้อยละ 6 ของโลก มีประชากรประมาณ  382  ล้านคน (ค.ศ.2011) หรือมีจำนวนมากถึงอันดับ 5 ของโลก และมีความหนาแน่นของประชากรประมาณ 22 คนต่อตารางกิโลเมตร  ประเทศที่มีจำนวนประชากรมากที่สุดของทวีป คือ ประเทศบราซิล มีประชากรประมาณ 187 ล้านคน ส่วนประเทศเอกราชที่มีจำนวนประชากรน้อยที่สุด คือ ประเทศซูรินาเม มีประชากรประมาณ 5 แสนคน

         -  บริเวณเทือกเขาแอนดีส ซึ่งเป็นเทือกเขาสูงที่มีแนวต่อเนื่องกันยาวที่สุดในโลก เป็นพื้นที่สูงชันทุรกันดาร เป็นอุปสรรคต่อการประกอบอาชีพและการตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่อาศัย
