วันต้นไม้ประจำปีของชาติ ตรงกับวันวิสาขบูชาของทุกปี เป็นวันสำคัญของชาติที่ประชาชนทุกหมู่เหล่าจะได้ร่วมกันปลูกต้นไม้ไว้เป็น ที่ระลึกและช่วยเพิ่มพูนทรัพยากรป่าไม้ อันเป็นการบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ให้แก่ประเทศชาติ อีกทางหนึ่งด้วย

การส่งเสริมให้ปลูกต้นไม้ในประเทศไทยมีจุดเริ่มต้นมาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2484 โดยกรมป่าไม้ จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ.2495 ได้มีการกำหนดให้มีวันปลูกต้นไม้ประจำปีขึ้น โดยคณะรัฐมนตรี ได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 23 เมษายน พ.ศ.2495 กำหนดให้วันชาติ วันที่ 24 มิถุนายน ของทุกปี เป็นวันปลูกต้นไม้ประจำปี และส่งเสริมให้ประชาชนขอรับกล้าไม้ไปปลูกในสถานที่ต่างๆ

วันปลูกต้นไม้ประจำปี ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงชื่อและระยะเวลา ไปตามความเหมาะสม กล่าวคือในปี พ.ศ.2503 ทางราชการประกาศยกเลิกวันชาติ ดังนั้นคณะรัฐมนตรีจึงได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 8 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2503 กำหนดให้วันเข้าพรรษาของทุกปีเป็น “วันต้นไม้ประจำปีของชาติ” เนื่องจากอยู่ในช่วงฤดูฝน มีฝนตก เหมาะสมกับการปลูกต้นไม้

ปัจจุบันวันต้นไม้ประจำปีของชาติ ตรงกับวันวิสาขบูชาของทุกปี เนื่องจากสภาพภูมิอากาศที่เปลี่ยนแปลงทำให้ฝนไม่ตกต้องตามฤดูกาล กล่าวคือ จะมีฝนตกก่อนถึงวันเข้าพรรษา และฝนจะทิ้งช่วงในระหว่างฤดูกาลเข้าพรรษา ทำให้การปลูกต้นไม้ในช่วงเข้าพรรษาไม่ได้ผลเท่าที่ควร กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์จึงได้เสนอให้คณะรัฐมนตรีพิจารณาอาอนุมัติให้วันวิสาขบูชา เป็นวันรักต้นไม้ประจำปีของชาติแทนวันเข้าพรรษา ซึ่งคณะรัฐมนตรีก็ได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 31 มกราคม พ.ศ.2532 กำหนดให้วันวิสาขบูชาของทุกปีเป็น “วันต้นไม้ประจำปีของชาติ” เพราะเป็นระยะเริ่มต้นฤดูฝน มีฝนตกลงมาแล้ว ซึ่งจะทำให้กิจกรรมการปลูกต้นไม้ได้ผลดียิ่งขึ้น
