กำหนดขึ้นเพื่อระลึกถึงการตั้งถิ่นฐานอย่างถาวรในอเมริกาของชาวยุโรป ซึ่งคนหลายนี้เป็นพวกนักแสวงบุญจากอังกฤษนั่นเอง และเพื่อเป็นการขอบคุณพระเจ้า ที่ช่วยให้การเก็บเกี่ยวพืชพันธุ์ธัญญาหารประสบความสำเร็จ ปัจจุบันชาวอเมริกัน ถือเป็นวันขอบคุณพระเจ้าที่ทำให้ทุกคนมีสุขภาพดี และมีความสุข ในวันนี้คนอเมริกันแทบทุกบ้านจะเลี้ยงฉลอง โดยมีสมาชิกทุกคนในครอบครัวจะมาทานอาหารร่วมกัน เช่น turkey, cranberry sauce,sweet potatoes และ pumpkin pie วันนี้เป็นวันที่ทำให้ชาวอเมริกันอ้วน ไปตามๆกัน เนื่องจากเป็นวันหยุดยาวและกิจกรรมที่ทำในครอบครัวไม่ได้มีอะไรมากมายนอกจากการ กิน และ ก็กิน  มีเพื่อนอเมริกันหลายคนอ้วนขึ้นภายในไม่กี่วันจนจำแทบไม่ได้
