เมื่อวันที่ 10 เม.ย. นายพิชัย จึงอนุวัตร กรรมการผู้จัดการฝ่ายการพาณิชย์สินค้าและไปรษณียภัณฑ์ บริษัท การบินไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) เปิดเผยว่า ได้นำเครื่องบินแบบโบอิ้ง 747- 400 จำนวน 2 ลำ มอบหมายให้บริษัท โบอิ้งฯ เป็นผู้ดำเนินการดัดแปลงให้เป็นเครื่องบินขนส่งสินค้าทางอากาศโดยเฉพาะ ซึ่งมีขีดความสามารถในการบรรทุกสินค้าได้ 100 ตันต่อเที่ยวบิน โดยเครื่องบินลำแรกได้ดำเนินการปรับปรุงจนแล้วเสร็จ และจะเริ่มให้บริการตามตารางการบินขนส่งสินค้าที่กำหนดไว้ตั้งแต่วันที่ 12 เม.ย. 2555 เป็นต้นไป คือเที่ยวบินที่ ทีจี 862 เส้นทาง กรุงเทพฯ-ไทเป-นาริตะ-กรุงเทพฯ ให้บริการขนส่งสินค้าทางอากาศระหว่างทวีป เช่น เอเชีย ยุโรป และออสเตรเลีย ไปยังเมืองสำคัญต่างๆ 9 เมือง ได้แก่ ไทเป โตเกียว ไฮเดอราบัด เชนไน เดลลี แฟรงก์เฟิร์ต อัมสเตอร์ดัม ซิดนีย์ และกรุงเทพฯ

ทั้งนี้ เพื่อเสริมศักยภาพและเพิ่มขีดความสามารถการบริการขนส่งสินค้าทางอากาศได้มากยิ่งขึ้น นอกจากนี้ ยังมีบริการขนส่งสินค้าแบบเช่าเหมาลำ (Chartered Flight) สำหรับผู้ประกอบการที่ต้องนำเข้าหรือส่งออกสินค้าปริมาณมากๆ ไปยังจุดหมายปลายทางได้ตามความต้องการอีกด้ว
