สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ หรืออาเซียน ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2510 (ค.ศ. 1967) ณ กรุงเทพฯ เป็นองค์กรความร่วมมือระดับภูมิภาค โดยมี วัตถุประสงค์เพื่อส่งเสริมความร่วมมือและความมั่นคงทางการเมือง การเจริญเติบโตทางการค้าและทางเศรษฐกิจ รวมทั้ง การพัฒนาทางสังคมของประเทศสมาชิก เพื่อภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ แรกเริ่ม อาเซียนประกอบด้วย 5 ประเทศ คือ อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ และไทย ต่อมาภายหลังยุคสงครามเย็น อาเซียนได้พยายามสร้างความสัมพันธ์และความร่วมมือกับประเทศอื่นๆ ในภูมิภาค โดยมีเป้าหมายที่จะขยายจำนวนประเทศสมาชิกให้เป็น 10 ประเทศทั่วเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ เริ่มด้วยการเป็นประเทศสมาชิกของประเทศบรูไนในปี พ.ศ. 2527 (ค.ศ. 1984) ต่อมาเวียดนามได้เข้าเป็นสมาชิกในปี พ.ศ. 2538 (ค.ศ. 1995) ลาวและพม่าในปี พ.ศ. 2540 (ค.ศ. 1997) และกัมพูชา ปี พ.ศ. 2542 (ค.ศ. 1999)
