ลักษณะของถ้ำเป็นโพรงลึกแนวดิ่ง 30 เมตร ทางเข้าและออกเป็นบันได ระยะทาง 120 เมตร และเพื่ออนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติจึงจัดมุมให้ชมเป็นจุดๆ โดยส่องไฟให้เห็นผนังแวววาวสวยงาม ไม่สามารถเข้าไปข้างในลึกๆ ได้ เพราะอากาศไม่ถ่ายเท ถ้ำนี้ได้มีการยกย่องให้มีความสวยงามเป็นอันดับ 1 ของประเทศไทย ถ้ำเช่นนี้พบได้ 3 แห่งในโลก คือประเทศออสเตรเลีย ประเทศจีน และประเทศไทย สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทอดพระเนตร ยังถ้ำแม่ลาน้อย ( ชื่อเดิม ) เมื่อวันที่ 19 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2544 และได้พระราชทานนามว่า “ถ้ำแก้วโกมล” และยังพระราชทานนามให้กับถ้ำย่อยๆ ทั้งห้าห้องของถ้ำแก้วโกมล ตามลักษณะของแต่ละห้องว่า
ห้องที่ 1 คือ ห้องพระทัยธาร มีที่มาจากที่น้ำในถ้ำละลายหินปูนไหลเหมือนเป็นธารน้ำตก ห้องที่ 2 คือ ห้องวิมานเมฆ ตั้งตามลักษณะของแร่ที่อยู่ตามเพดาน ซึ่งมองแล้วดูคล้ายปุยเมฆ ห้องที่ 3 คือ ห้อง เฉกหิมพานต์ ถัดลงไปจากห้องที่ 1 และ 2 ประมาณ 50 เมตร ตามบันได มีผลึกหินงอกหินย้อย และลวดลายริ้วรอยสวยงามตระการตา เป็นสีขาวบ้างสีน้ำตาลบ้างตามรอบน้ำที่ไหลเข้ามา ชื่อห้องนี้เกิดจากจินตนาการของพระองค์ท่านที่มองแล้วเหมือนยู่ในป่าหิมพานต์ตามวรรณคดี ห้องที่ 4 คือ ห้อง ม่านผาแก้ว งดงามไปด้วยผลึกแก้วขาวใสที่เกาะอยู่ราวกับม่านเต็มถ้ำ และห้องที่ 5 คือ ห้องเพริศแพร้วมณีบุปผา ไหลที่สุดอยู่ลึกลงไปอีก 30 เมตร ภายในห้องโถงถ้ำเต็มไปด้วยผลึกแร่สีขาวราวเกล็ดหิมะที่ละเอียดเป็นรูปเข็มคล้ายเกล็ดน้ำแข็ง เปราะบาง แตกหักง่าย จัดว่าเป็นผลึกที่สวยงามและเด่นที่สุดของถ้ำแก้วโกมล ช่วงเวลาที่เหมาะกับการเที่ยวถ้ำแก้วโกมล อยู่ระหว่างเดือนธันวาคม – กุมภาพันธ์ หลังจากเที่ยวชมถ้ำแก้วโกมลเสร็จ คุณสามารถเดินทางไปเที่ยวชมสถานที่เที่ยวทางธรรมชาติแห่งอื่นของจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนต่อได้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นดอยอูคอ ขับรถตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 108 ไปไม่ไกลก็ถึงอำเภอขุนยวม ได้ชมความงามของทุ่งดอกบัวตองแสนอลังการ
