3 มีนาคม เป็นวันสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลก ซึ่งแปลมาจากชื่อภาษาอังกฤษ World Wildlife Day กำหนดขึ้นโดยมติที่ประชุมภาคีอนุสัญญาว่าด้วยการค้าระหว่างประเทศซึ่งชนิดสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าที่ใกล้สูญพันธุ์ ครั้งที่ 16 หรือ CITES CoP16 ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ประเทศไทย เมื่อวันที่ 3-14 มีนาคม 2556 เนื่องในโอกาสครบรอบ 40 ปีของการกำเนิดอนุสัญญาว่าด้วยการค้าระหว่างประเทศซึ่งชนิดสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าที่ใกล้สูญพันธุ์ หรือ CITES ประเทศไทยในฐานะเจ้าภาพจัดการประชุมจึงเสนอขอความเห็นชอบในการกำหนดให้วันที่ 3 มีนาคม ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่มีการลงนามรับรองอนุสัญญา CITES ที่กรุงวอชิงตัน ดี ซี เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2516 เป็นวันสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลก โดยที่ประชุม CITES CoP16 ได้มีมติเอกฉันท์เห็นชอบในการกำหนดให้วันที่ 3 มีนาคม ของทุกปี เป็นวันสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลก
20 ธันวาคม ปีเดียวกัน ที่ประชุมสมัชชาใหญ่แห่งสหประชาชาติ ครั้งที่ 68 ณ นครนิวยอร์ก สหรัฐอเมริกา ได้ให้การรับรองและประกาศให้วันที่ 3 มีนาคม ของทุกปี เป็นวันสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลก เพื่อให้เป็นวันแห่งการเฉลิมฉลองและเผยแพร่ความรู้เกี่ยวกับสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลกตลอดจนร่วมตระหนักถึงคุณประโยชน์ของการอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าที่มีต่อมวลมนุษยชาติ
โดยในโอกาสที่เป็นปีแรกของวันสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลก เพื่อให้เป็นที่รับทราบกันอย่างกว้างขวางถึงการกำเนิดของวันสำคัญนี้ กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่า และพันธุ์พืช ในฐานะหน่วยงานหลักในการอนุวัติตามอนุสัญญา CITES ได้กำหนดให้มีการจัดงานวันสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าโลก ณ กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่า และพันธุ์พืช ในวันที่ 3 มีนาคม 2557 โดยมีการจัดนิทรรศการและกิจกรรมเผยแพร่ความรู้เกี่ยวกับสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่า การสัมมนาทางวิชาการของเจ้าหน้าที่ และแถลงข่าวการจัดงานอีกด้วย
จึงขอเชิญชาวไทยร่วมเฉลิมฉลองความงดงามและความหลากหลายของสัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าของโลก ตลอดจนร่วมตระหนักถึง คุณประโยชน์ของการอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่าและพืชป่าที่มีต่อมวลมนุษยชาติ ณ กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่าและพันธุ์พืช ในวันที่ 3 มีนาคม 2557
