ในสังคมโลกปัจจุบัน คงไม่อาจปฏิเสธได้ว่าภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาสากลของโลกที่ใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลาย และเข้ามามีบทบาทสำคัญในวิถีชีวิตของผู้คนจำนวนไม่น้อย จากอิทธิพลของความก้าวไกลทางด้านเทคโนโลยีและการสื่อสาร ส่งผลให้ภาษาอังกฤษยิ่งทวีความสำคัญมากยิ่งขึ้น เพราะถือเป็นเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการติดต่อสื่อสาร การศึกษาค้นคว้าแสวงหาความรู้จากแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่หลากหลาย รวมถึงการประกอบอาชีพ หลักสูตรการศึกษาระดับขั้นการศึกษาพื้นฐาน ไม่ได้มองข้ามความสำคัญและความจำเป็นของภาษาอังกฤษ มีการกำหนดให้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาต่างประเทศที่เป็นสาระการเรียนรู้พื้นฐานซึ่งนักเรียนทุกคนต้องได้เรียนรู้ เพื่อให้มีความรู้ความสามารถในการฟัง พูด อ่าน เขียน เข้าใจความแตกต่างของภาษา การคิด สังคม เศรษฐกิจ การเมือง การปกครอง และวัฒนธรรม ขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี และสามารถสื่อสารกับชาวชาติได้ รวมทั้งช่วยให้ผู้เรียนเข้าถึงองค์ความรู้ต่าง ๆ ทั้งในห้องเรียนและนอกห้องเรียนได้ง่ายและกว้างขึ้น ในขณะที่ภาษาต่างประเทศอื่น ๆ เช่น ภาษาจีน ภาษาญี่ปุ่น ภาษาเกาหลี เป็นต้น สถานศึกษาสามารถจัดสอนได้ตามความเหมาะสมโดยให้อยู่ในดุลพินิจ

จะเห็นว่าได้ว่าในบ้านเรา แม้รัฐบาลบังคับให้ทุกคนเรียนภาษาอังกฤษอยู่ในหลักสูตรการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน แต่ก็ยังมีคนไทยจำนวนมากที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษ หรือไม่สามารถสื่อสารด้วยภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ ทั้ง ๆ ที่รวมเวลาในการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษแล้ว ส่วนใหญ่ไม่ต่ำกว่า 10 ปี หรือแม้แต่ผู้ที่จบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี หรือแม้กระทั่งปริญญาโทยังมีจำนวนไม่น้อยที่ไม่สามารถสื่อสารกับชาวต่างชาติได้ มีหลากหลายวิธีที่เสนอแนะแนวทางในการแก้ปัญหาภาษาอังกฤษของเด็กไทย เช่น การสอนให้นักเรียนรู้คำศัพท์จำนวนมาก เพราะปัญหานักเรียนรู้ศัพท์น้อยนั้นเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญโดยตรงต่อผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ และยังก่อให้เกิดปัญหาต่อเนื่องอีกหลายอย่างตามมา การสอนภาษาอังกฤษในแต่ละชั่วโมง จำเป็นต้องให้นักเรียนได้ฝึกครบทุกทักษะทั้งการฟัง พูด อ่าน และเขียน เป็นต้น

เมื่อประเทศไทยเป็นอีกหนึ่งสมาชิกที่กำลังจะก้าวสู่ประชาคมอาเซียนในอนาคตอันใกล้ ภาษาอังกฤษยิ่งทบทวีความสำคัญและความจำเป็นมากขึ้น คงถึงเวลาแล้วที่จะต้องมีการวางแผนและเตรียมพร้อมพัฒนาเด็ก เยาวชน และคนไทยให้มีคุณภาพและมีคุณลักษณะอันพึงประสงค์ตามที่สังคมคาดหวัง ครูผู้สอนซึ่งเป็นบุคลากรสำคัญในการถ่ายทอดความรู้เพื่อพัฒนาสังคม ต้องมีการปรับการเรียนเปลี่ยนการสอน ใฝ่ศึกษาเรียนรู้ตลอดเวลา แสวงหาเทคนิควิธีสอนใหม่ๆ เพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศและจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ที่หลากหลาย และผู้บริหารต้องให้ความสำคัญพร้อมสนับสนุนกระบวนการจัดการเรียนการสอนในการเสริมสร้างให้ผู้เรียนมีทัศนคติที่ดีต่อการเรียนรู้ กระตุ้นให้ผู้เรียนเห็นความสำคัญของภาษาประจำชาติและภาษาต่างประเทศ เพื่อใช้เป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการแสวงหาความรู้ในสังคมอาเซียนและเวทีโลกต่อไป
