ศาสตราจารย์กมล ทัศนาญชลีศิลปินแห่งชาติ ปี 2540 สาขาทัศนศิลป์ (จิตรกรรมและสื่อผสม) เกิดเมื่อ 17 มกราคม 2487 ถือเป็นศิลปินดีเด่นในด้านจิตรกรรมและสื่อผสมร่วมสมัยของไทย ได้รับการยกย่องทั้งในและต่างประเทศ ทางด้านศิลปะร่วมสมัยของไทย ผลงานที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ในแนวทางสากลที่มีพื้นฐานจากศิลปะแบบประเพณีไทยในอดีต
ปัจจุบัน ศ.กมล ทัศนาญชลี สอนหนังสือและสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะอยู่ที่สหรัฐอเมริกา ในฐานะประธานสภาศิลปกรรมไทยแห่งสหรัฐอเมริกา นอกจากนี้ยังสนับสนุนและส่งเสริมศิลปินไทยในการศึกษาและหาประสบการณ์ ทั้งนี้ ศ.กมล ทัศนาญชลี ยังเป็นคนไทยและคนเอเชียเพียงหนึ่งเดียว ที่ผลงานศิลปะถูกบันทึกไว้ใน Gardner's Art Through The Ages หรือ หนังสือประวัติศาสตร์ศิลป์โลก ซึ่งเป็นหนังสือรวบรวมผลงานศิลปะทั่วโลก ทั้งก่อนประวัติศาสตร์จนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยทั่วโลกมีศิลปินได้รับการบันทึกเพียง 30,000 คน ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นชาวยุโรปและอเมริกา
การศึกษา
จบการศึกษาจาก วิทยาลัยเพาะช่าง ในปี 2507 และ มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ ประสานมิตร กรุงเทพฯ ในปี 2512 จากนั้นจึงไปต่อปริญญาโทด้านศิลปะในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ในปี 2520 ที่ Otis ArtInstitute of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A
