ความหมายของการให้คำปรึกษา
​การให้คำปรึกษา หมายถึง กระบวนการให้ความช่วยเหลือ ติดต่อสื่อสารกันด้วยวาจาและกิริยาท่าทาง ที่เกิดจากสัมพันธภาพทางวิชาชีพของบุคคลอย่างน้อย 2 คน คือ ผู้ให้และผู้รับคำปรึกษา
ผู้ให้คำปรึกษาในที่นี้หมายถึง ครูที่มีคุณลักษณะที่เอื้อต่อการให้คำปรึกษา มีความรู้และทักษะในการให้คำปรึกษา ทำหน้าที่ให้ความช่วยเหลือแก่ผู้รับคำปรึกษาหรือนักเรียน ซึ่งเป็นผู้ที่กำลังประสบความยุ่งยากใจ หรือมีความทุกข์และต้องการความช่วยเหลือให้เข้าใจตนเอง เข้าใจสิ่งแวดล้อม ให้มีทักษะในการตัดสินใจ และหาทางออกเพื่อลดหรือขจัดความทุกข์ ความยุ่งยากใจด้วยตนเองได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ สามารถพัฒนาตนเองไปสู่เป้าหมายที่ต้องการ (Burks and Shefflre, 1979 อ้างถึงใน George & Cristiani, 1995)
