วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ มุ่งเน้นทำความเข้าใจว่าลูกปัดสมัยทวารวดีที่พบในแหล่งโบราณคดีเขตภาคกลางและภาคใต้ของประเทศไทยสามารถอธิบายรูปแบบของความสัมพันธ์ด้านการค้าและศาสนาที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างอินเดียโบราณกับพื้นที่ดังกล่าวได้หรือไม่ อย่างไร โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์การวิจัย คือ 1. เพื่อทราบถึงรูปแบบของความสัมพันธ์ในด้านการค้าและศาสนาระหว่างชุมชนในอินเดียโบราณกับชุมชนทวารวดีในดินแดนไทย 2. เพื่อทราบผลของความสัมพันธ์ในด้านการค้าและศาสนาระหว่างชุมชนในอินเดียโบราณกับชุมชนทวารวดีที่เข้ามามีอิทธิพลในดินแดนไทย โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative Research) ประกอบด้วยการรวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารหลักฐานโบราณคดี การศึกษาจากเอกสาร และการสำรวจแหล่งโบราณคดีทวารวดี โดยอาศัยแนวคิดทฤษฎีทางโบราณคดีในการวิเคราะห์และอธิบายประกอบด้วยทฤษฎีประวัติวัฒนธรรม (Culture History) และทฤษฎีโบราณคดีเชิงหน้าที่นิยม (Functionalism) รวมทั้งใช้แนวคิดทฤษฎีในการช่วยอธิบายความสัมพันธ์ทางวัฒนธรรมด้วยแนวคิดภารตวิวัฒน์และแนวคิดผสมผสานทางวัฒนธรรม
