การประกอบพิธีไหว้ครู ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐา

การประกอบพิธีไหว้ครู ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานถึงความเป็นมาของพิธีไหว้ครู และครอบครูโขน-ละคร ว่าสืบเนื่องมาตั้งแต่เมื่อใด แต่ได้มีการกำหนดระเบียบแบบแผน เพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการปฏิบัติโดยการบอกเล่าต่อๆ กันมาเป็นมุขปาฐะ ตำราพิธีไหว้ครู และครอบโขนละครของไทยมีอยู่ 2 ฉบับ คือ สมุดไทยมีจำนวน 3 เล่ม แต่คงเหลือเพียงเล่ม 2 เล่มเดียว ส่วนเล่ม 1 และเล่ม 3 หายไป ซึ่งเข้าใจว่ามีนักปราชญ์รวบรวมชำระทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ตราเป็นวิธีไหว้ครูโขน-ละคร ฉบับหลวง ในราชกาลที่ 4 ส่วนอีกฉบับหนึ่ง คือ สมุดไทยเล่ม 2 ที่หลงเหลือมาจากฉบับแรก ได้ตีพิมพ์ใช้เป็นแบบฉบับของการทำพิธีไหว้ครูโขน-ละครในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 6

ในสมัยราชกาลที่ 4 พิธีไหว้ครูโขน-ละคร ได้เริ่มเมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี ขึ้น 1 ค่ำ เดือน 6 พ.ศ.2397 ส่วนการไหว้ครูนอกพระราชวังนั้นเริ่มมีมานานแล้ว เพราะได้ปฏิบัติกันเป็นประเพณีติดต่อกัน อย่างเช่น การฝึกหักละครโนห์ราชาตรี เมื่อรำเพลงครูได้แล้ว ครูจึงสอนให้ท่องบทละครโนห์ราชาตรียังใช้ร้องกลอนสด (เหมือนอย่างเล่นเพลงลิเก) ไม่มีหนังสือบท อย่างละครในกรุงเทพฯ แล้วสอนให้ร้องให้รำทำบทไปจนพอทำได้ ผู้ที่เป็นครูหัดจึงพาไปให้ครูครอบ เรียกว่า "เข้าครู"
