วันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปีเป็น “วันพ่อแห่งชาติ” วันคล้ายวันพระราชสมภพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งความเป็นมาของวันสำคัญนี้ คือ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ทรงพระราชสมภพเมื่อ วันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2470 ณ โรงพยาบาล เมาท์ ออเบิร์น นครบอสตัน สหรัฐอเมริกา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จฯขึ้นเถลิงถวัลย์ราชสมบัติเป็นรัชกาลที่ 9 แห่งบรมจักรีวงศ์ กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์
วันพ่อแห่งชาติ ได้จัดให้มีขึ้นครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2523 สัญลักษณ์ที่ใช้ในวันพ่อได้แก่ ดอกพุทธรักษา ซึ่งมีชื่ออันเป็นมงคล หลักการและเหตุผลในการจัดตั้งวันพ่อ คือโดยที่พ่อเป็นผู้มีพระคุณที่มีบทบาทสำคัญ ต่อครอบครัวและสังคม สมควรที่ผู้เป็นลูกจะเคารพเทิดทูนตอบแทนพระคุณด้วยความกตัญญู และสมควรที่สังคมจะยกย่องให้เกียรติรำลึกถึงผู้เป็นพ่อ จึงถือเอาวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปีซึ่งเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาเป็น “วันพ่อแห่งชาติ” ด้วยพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่ทรงมีต่อพสกนิกรชาว ไทยอย่างนานัปการ ทรงเป็นพระราชบิดาของพระราชโอรสและพระราชธิดา ทรงรักใคร่และห่วงใยตั้งแต่พระเยาว์จนถึงปัจจุบัน ทางราชการจึงได้กำหนดให้เป็นวันหยุดราชการ เพื่อให้ประชาชนชาวไทย ได้ร่วมกันเฉลิมฉลองในวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว

วัตถุประสงค์ในการจัดงานวันพ่อแห่งชาติ
๑.เพื่อเทิดทูนและเผยแพร่พระเกียรติคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชในฐานะพ่อของแผ่นดินผู้ทรงมีพระมหากรุณาธิคุณต่อปวงชนชาวไทย
๒.เพื่อให้ผู้เป็นลูกได้สำนึกถึงพระคุณของพ่อ และตระหนังถึงหน้าที่ของลูกที่พึงมีต่อพ่อ ได้แก่ การแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อพ่อ
๓.เพื่อให้ผู้ที่เป็นพ่อได้ตระหนักถึงหน้าที่ของตนที่พึงมีต่อบุตรธิดาและครอบครัว
๔.เพื่อเผยแพร่พระคุณและบทบาทของพ่อที่มีต่อครอบครัวสังคมและประเทศชาติ
๕.เพื่อให้สังคมได้ตระหนักถึงบทบาทและพระคุณของพ่อที่มีต่อครอบครัวสังคมและประเทศชาติ
๖.เพื่อประกาศเกียรติคุณให้กับพ่อและลูกที่ปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของตนได้เป็นอย่างดีสมควรแก่การชื่นชมยกย่องของสังคมโดยทั่วไป
๗. เพื่อยกย่องพ่อดีเด่น และลูกที่มีความกตัญญูต่อพ่อ
