From 1997 to 2002, the maintenance lime rate increased to 2.64 t ha−1(Fig. 1), and soil pH increased sharply 12 months after the top-up as determined by the liming phases (Fig. 2). By 2002, <br>the average soil pH across 6 lime phases was approaching the target pH of 5.5. From 2003 onwards, <br>the maintenance lime rate was reduced to 1.52 t ha−1 (Fig. 1) which was enough to maintain soil pH around 5.5 for the remaining period of experiment. Analysis of variance showed that there was<br> no significant difference in soil pH in the 0–0.10m depth between rotation treatments under<br>limed conditions, but the linear trend over lime time was highly significant(P < 0.001, Table 3).
