กติกาเบื้องต้น

1. การออกนอกเส้น มีการกำหนดเส้นออกแต่งต่างกันในกรณีเล่นเดี่ยวและเล่นคู่
2. การเสิร์ฟลูก ตามกติกา ที่ถูกต้อง คือ
1. หัวไม้ขณะสัมผัสลูกต้องต่ำกว่าข้อมืออย่างเห็นได้ชัด
2. หัวไม้ขณะสัมผัสลูกต้องต่ำกว่าเอวอย่างเห็นได้ชัด
3. ผู้เล่นต้องไม่ถ่วงเวลา หรือเสริฟช้า หรือเสริฟ 2 จังหวะ การเสริฟ ต้องเสริฟไปด้วยจังหวะเดียว
4. ขณะเสิร์ฟ ส่วนใดส่วนหนึ่งของเท้าทั้ง 2 ข้างต้องสัมผัสพื้นตลอดเวลา
5. การเสิร์ฟลูกที่ถูกต้อง ต้องให้แร็กเก็ตสัมผัสกับหัวลูกก่อน หากโดนขนก่อนถือว่าผิดกติกา
3. ขณะตีลูกโต้กัน ห้ามนำส่วนหนึ่งส่วนใดของร่างกายหรือไม้แบดไปสัมผัสกับเน็ท
4. ห้ามตีลูกที่ฝั่งตรงข้ามโต้กลับมาในขณะที่ลูกยังไม่ข้ามเน็ทมายังแดนเรา(Over net)

สหพันธ์ แบดมินตันนานาชาติ ( IBF) ได้กำหนดให้ ทดลองใช้ระบบการนับคะแนนการแข่งขันกีฬาแบดมินตันใหม่ ในระบบ 3 x 21 คะแนน ตั้งแต่ วันที่ 1 มกราคม 2549 เป็นต้นไป

รายละเอียดของกติกาการนับคะแนนมีดังนี้
1. แมทช์หนึ่งต้องชนะให้ได้มากที่สุดใน 3 เกม
2. ทุกประเภทของการแข่งขัน ฝ่ายที่ได้ 21 คะแนนก่อนเป็นฝ่ายชนะในเกมนั้น ยกเว้นเมื่อได้ 20 คะแนนเท่ากันต้องนับต่อให้มีคะแนนห่างกัน 2 คะแนน ฝ่ายใดได้คะแนนนำ 2 คะแนนก่อนเป็นผู้ชนะ แต่ไม่เกิน 30 คะแนน หมายความว่าหากการเล่นดำเนินมาจนถึง 29 คะแนนเท่ากัน ฝ่ายใดได้ 30 คะแนนก่อน เป็นผู้ชนะ
3. ฝ่ายชนะเป็นฝ่ายส่งลูกต่อในเกมต่อไป
4. ฝ่ายชนะการเสี่ยงสิทธิ์เป็นฝ่ายส่งลูกได้ก่อน หากฝ่ายตรงข้ามทำลูก "เสีย" หรือลูกไม่ได้อยู่ในการเล่น ผู้เลือกส่งลูกก่อนจะได้คะแนนนำ 1-0 และได้ส่งลูกต่อ แต่หากผู้ส่งลูกทำลูก "เสีย" หรือลูกไม่อยู่ในการเล่น ฝ่ายตรงข้ามจะได้คะแนนตามมาทันทีเป็น 1-1 และฝ่ายตรงข้ามจะได้สิทธิ์ส่งลูกแทน ดำเนินเช่นนี้ต่อไปจนจบเกม
5. ประเภทคู่ให้ส่งลูกฝ่ายละ 1 ครั้ง ตามคะแนนที่ได้ ขณะที่เปลี่ยนฝ่ายส่งลูก หากคะแนนเป็นจำนวนคี่ ผู้อยู่คอร์ดด้านซ้ายเป็นผู้ส่งลูก หากคะแนนเป็นจำนวนคู่ผู้อยู่คอร์ดด้านขวาเป็นฝ่ายส่งลูก
