ต่อมา พระสุมนเถรเจ้าจึงให้ผู้จะขุดพระบรมธาตุนั้นทุกคนสมาทานศีล ๕ และศีล ๘ ทุกคนแล้วจึงลงมือขุดก็พบอิฐและศิลา และในไม่ช้าผอบที่บรรจุพระบรมธาตุเป็นชั้นๆ คือ
ชั้นแรก เป็นผอบทองเหลือง
ชั้นที่สอง เป็นผอบเงิน
ชั้นที่สาม เป็นผอบทองคำ
ชั้นที่สี่ เป็นที่บรรจุพระบรมธาตุ เป็นผอบแก้วประพาฬ ขนาดโตเท่าลูกทับทิม

เมื่อพระเจ้าลือไทยทรงทราบข่าวนั้น จึงโปรดให้สร้างปราสาทขึ้นหลังหนึ่งเพื่อประดิษฐานพระบรมธาตุที่ได้มานี้ เพราะทรงเลื่อมใสและได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นพระบรมธาตุแสดงปาฏิหารย์อย่างน่าอัศจรรย์มาแล้ว พระองค์ส่งข่าวไปถวายพระธรรมราชาเจ้าเมืองสุโขทัย พระเจ้าธรรมราชาก็ทรงยินดียิ่ง ทรงดำริว่าถ้าพระธาตุองค์นี้แสดงปาฏิหารย์ดังที่คนเล่าลือแล้วไซร้ เราจักสร้างเจดีย์ทองคำองค์หนึ่งในเมืองนี้เพื่อประดิษฐานไว้เป็นที่สักการะบูชาให้จงได้ แต่พระบรมธาตุมิได้แสดงปาฏิหารย์ดังที่ได้ยิน จึงมิทรงเชื่อถือถึงกับรับสั่งคืนพระบรมะตุให้แก่พระสุมนเถรเจ้าตามเดิม
ในสมัยพระเจ้ากือนาแห่งราชวงศ์มังรายที่ ๖ ขึ้นครองนครเชียงใหม่ จุลศักราช ๗๒๙ พ.ศ. ๑๙๑๐ พระองค์มีความเลื่อมใสในพระพุทธศาสนา จึงให้ไปนิมนต์พระสุมนเถรเจ้า มาประกาศศาสนาที่เมืองเชียงใหม่ตามลัทธิลังกา ทางสุโขทัยก็ยินยอมให้พระสุมนเถรเจ้ามาพร้อมกับพระธาตุนั้นมาด้วย ภายหลังพระเจ้ากือนาได้อัญเชิญไปบรรจุไว้ ณ วัดบุปุผารามสวนดอกไม้หลวง พ.ศ. ๑๙๒๖
