The government should do more to tackle human trafficking gangs, Lawyers Council of Thailand (LCT)’s Human Rights Sub-Committee on Ethnic Minorities, the Stateless, Migrant Workers and Displaced Persons says.
“The state has focused on making money from tourism, so investigation procedures [for refugee smuggling] are lax. This increases the chances for human traffickers to exploit refugee,” said subcommittee chairman Surapong Kongchantuk.

The subcommittee reported that about 2000 new refugees registered with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner in Thailand last year. The number soared to 7000 between January and July this year.

Kohnwilai Teppunkoonngam, an LCT lawyer, said such treatment of refugees constituted human trafficking, but many state officials ignored this fact
