ในทางพระพุทธศาสนานั้น จึงเน้นสอนโดยถือการกระทำเป็นใหญ่ (กรรมนิยาม) ซึ่งผิดกัศาสนาหรือความเชื่ออื่น ๆ ที่เข้าใจว่า ทุกสิ่งเกิดขึ้นด้วยการบันดาลผลของเทพเจ้าหรือสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ต่าง ๆ นอกจากนี้ในทางคำสอนทางพุทธศาสนายังเน้นย้ำว่า “กรรม” นั้นส่งผลโดยตรงต่อการรองรับผลของกรรมในทุกกรณีโดยจำเป็นต้องมีเจตนาต้นสายปลายเหตุและมีผลของการกระทำนั้นในทางที่ดีหรือไม่ดี (บุญหรือบาป) ในเรื่องวิบากกรรมเสมอ ฉะนั้นบุคคลบุคคลจะได้ดีหรือชั่ว ได้รับสุขหรือทุกข์ ก็เพราะกรรม หรือการกระทำของตนเองทั้งสิ้น หากเราไม่ดำเนินทางตามที่พระพุทธองค์ทรงสอนไว้ แม้จะสวดมนต์หรือวิงวอนขอร้องต่อสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์เพียงใด ก็ไม่อาจจะช่วยให้เราพบความดีและความสุขได้ เพราะหากทุกคนมีความภักดีและวิงวอนต่อสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์แล้วได้สมใจปรารถนาเสมอ มนุษย์เราทุกวันนี้ก็คงไม่ต้องทำอะไรอีกเพื่อให้ชีวิตตัวเองเป็นไปดังหวัง

สำหรับคำสอนในพระพุทธศาสนา ชาวพุทธควรมีศรัทธา ๔ อย่าง คือ
