ศาสตราจารย์ ดร. ชัยวัฒน์ สถาอานันท์ เป็นศาสตราจารย์ประจำและหัวหน้าสาขาวิชาการเมืองการปกครอง คณะรัฐศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ ได้รับรางวัลนักวิจัยดีเด่นแห่งชาติสาขารัฐศาสตร์และรัฐประศาสนศาสตร์ในปี พ.ศ. 2549 เป็นนักวิชาการคนหนึ่งที่มีบทบาทในการเสนอแนวทางเพื่อคลี่คลายความไม่สงบในภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย และเป็นกรรมการภาคประชาสังคมนอกพื้นที่ ในคณะกรรมการอิสระเพื่อความสมานฉันท์แห่งชาติ (กอส.) นอกจากนี้ชัยวัฒน์ยังมีตำแหน่งเป็นกรรมการ และคณะทำงานฝ่ายจัดการ/บรรณาธิการ ของโครงการจัดพิมพ์คบไฟ มูลนิธิเพื่อการศึกษาประชาธิปไตยและการพัฒนา ซึ่งเป็นโครงการจัดพิมพ์ที่พิมพ์เผยแพร่หนังสือวิชาการทั้งของนักวิชาการไทยและต่างประเทศ ตลอดจนวรรณกรรมชั้นดีจากต่างประเทศ เป็นจำนวนมากมายอย่างต่อเนื่อง
