ประวัติ

          วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม  หรือเรียกสามัญว่า  วัดพระแก้ว   เป็นวัดที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก  ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ  พ.ศ. 2325  พร้อมกับการสร้างพระบรมมหาราชวัง  และกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ สืบตามราชประเพณีการสร้างพระอารามในพระราชฐานสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา  โดยมีพระราชประสงค์จะให้เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากร เป็นพระพุทธรูปปางสมาธิทำด้วยมณีสีเขียวสดใสเนื้อเดียวกันทั้งองค์  หน้าตักกว้าง  48.3  เซนติเมตร  สูงจากฐานถึงยอดพระเศียร  66  เซนติเมตร  ซึ่งทรงมีพระราชศรัทธาเคารพเลื่อมใสเป็นที่ยิ่ง   ทั้งยังได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ  พระราชทานพระนามใหม่ให้ต้องกับการมีพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากรพระองค์นี้เป็นศิริสำหรับพระนครว่า “กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์อินท์อโยธยา”   อันมีความหมายว่า  “เป็นที่เก็บรักษาไว้ขององค์พระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากร” รัชกาลที่  1  ทรงสร้างวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดารามพร้อม ๆ กับการสร้างพระราชมณเฑียรและป้อมปราการในพระบรมมหาราชวัง   แต่สิ่งก่อสร้างในพระบรมมหาราชวังครั้งแรกนั้นเป็นเครื่องไม้ทั้งสิ้น  เว้นแต่วัดพระแก้วเท่านั้นที่ก่ออิฐถือปูน  วัดพระแก้วสร้าง  2  ปีก็เสร็จลงในปี   พ.ศ. 2327 ภายในวัดประกอบด้วยพระอุโบสถ ( มีภาพเขียนฝาผนัง )  พระระเบียงรอบวัด  ( ผนังเขียนเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ )    หอมณเฑียรธรรมตั้งอยู่กลางสระน้ำด้านเหนือของพระอุโบสถ    พระเจดีย์ทอง  2  องค์  ตั้งอยู่หน้ามณเฑียรธรรม  หอระฆังตั้งอยู่ด้านขวาของพระอุโบสถ    ระฆังซึ่งนำมาจากวัดสระเกศ  ศาลาราย  12  หลัง  และทรงโปรดให้เชิญพระเทพบิดา  คือ  พระรูปสมเด็จพระรามาธิบดี (อู่ทอง) ซึ่งเป็นปฐมวงศ์สร้างกรุงเก่า  มาแปลงเป็นพระพุทธรูปหุ้มเงิน  ปิดทอง  ประดิษฐานไว้ในพระวิหาร   พระวิหารนั้นพระราชทานนามว่า  “หอพระเทพบิดร”  วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดารามได้รับการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์มาโดยตลอด การบูรณะครั้งใหญ่ทั้งพระอาราม มีขึ้นในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเนื่องจากวัดชำรุดทรุดโทรมลงมาก และในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีการบูรณะเพื่อเฉลิมฉลองกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ครบ 100 ปี  ใน พ.ศ. 2425   ต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ทั้งพระอารามในโอกาสที่มีพระราชพิธีฉลองพระนครครบ 150 ปี และในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ทั้งพระอารามอีกครั้งใน พ.ศ. 2525  เมื่อมีการสมโภชกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ 200 ปีโดยมีสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารีทรงเป็นองค์ประธานในการบูรณะ
