ผลการทดลองปรากฏว่าปลานิลที่โปรดเกล้าให้ทดลองเลี้ยงได้เจริญเติบโตและแพร่ขยายพันธุ์ได้เป็นอย่างดี ต่อมาจึงได้พระราชทานชื่อว่า ปลานิล (โดยมีที่มาจากชื่อแม่น้ำไนล์ (Nile) ที่เป็นถิ่นที่อยู่อาศัยดั้งเดิม หรือชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ Tilapia nilotica) และพระราชทานพันธุ์ปลาดังกล่าวให้กับกรมประมงจำนวนหนึ่ง เมื่อวันที่ 17 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2509 เพื่อนำไปขยายพันธุ์และแจกจ่ายแก่พสกนิกร และปล่อยลงไว้ตามแหล่งน้ำต่าง ๆ ตามที่เห็นว่าเหมาะสม เนื่องจากปลานิลมีคุณลักษณะพิเศษหลายอย่าง เช่น กินอาหารได้ทุกชนิด เช่น ไรน้ำ ตะไคร่น้ำ ตัวอ่อนของแมลงและสัตว์น้ำเล็ก ๆ มีขนาดลำตัวใหญ่ ความยาวประมาณ 10-30 เซนติเมตร แพร่ขยายพันธุ์ง่าย และมีรสชาติดี
