สำนักงานตรวจคนเข้าเมือง มีอำนาจหน้าที่ดังนี้
เป็นฝ่ายอำนวยการด้านยุทธศาสตร์ให้สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติในการวางแผน ควบคุม ตรวจสอบ ให้คำแนะนำ และเสนอแนะการปฏิบัติงานตามอำนาจหน้าที่ของสำนักงานตรวจคนเข้าเมืองและหน่วยงานในสังกัด
ปฏิบัติงานตามประมวลกฎหมายวิธีพิจารณาความอาญา กฎหมายว่าด้วยคนเข้าเมือง กฏหมายว่าด้วยการทะเบียนคนต่างด้าว กฎหมายว่าด้วยการป้องกันและปราบปรามการค้ามนุษย์ และกฎหมายอื่นอันเกี่ยวกับความผิดทางอาญาทั่วราชอาณาจักร
ปฎิบัติงานร่วมกับหรือสนับสนุนการปฏิบัติงานของหน่วยงานอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง หรือได้รับมอบหมาย
