การประยุกต์ภาษาศาสตร์กับการสอนภาษานั้นต้องคำนึงว่าหลักสูตรมุ่งสอนภาษาเพื่ออะไร เพราะการศึกษาภาษา เราศึกษากัน ๒ แนว คือ
๑. ศึกษาภาษาของตนหรือภาษาต่างประเทศ เพื่อจะนำมาเป็นเครื่องมือ สำหรับสื่อความคิดเปรียบได้กับการเรียนขับรถ คือ ให้มีทักษะในการใช้ภาษาเป็นเครื่องมือสื่อสารที่มีประสิทธิภาพ
๒. ศึกษาภาษาเพื่อรู้และเข้าใจลักษณะของภาษาในฐานะที่มันสามารถทำหน้าที่เป็นสื่อ
หรือเป็นตัวกลางให้มนุษย์ได้ใช้ติดต่อสื่อสารกันได้
