โรตีสายไหมเป็นขนมประจำจังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยาและเป็นขนมของชาวไทยมุสลิมที่มีมาตั้งแต่บรรพบุรุษคือ 

นายบังเปีย  แสงอรุณ  เป็นผู้นำเข้ามาในจังหวัดอยุธยา  นายบังเปียเกิดในครอบครัวที่ประกอบอาชีพทางการเกษตร  

คือทำนา  มีพี่น้อง  ๑๐  คน  ชื่อจริงคือ  นายซาเล็ม  แสงอรุณ  เกิดวันพุธ  เดือน  ๑๒ ปี   พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๙  ณ  บ้านวงแหวน  

บางปะอิน  คลอง  ๑  อำเภอวังน้อย  จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา ด้วยฐานะที่ยากจน  เด็กชายซาเล็มจึงตัดสินใจออกจากบ้าน  

เมื่ออายุได้  ๑๑  ขวบ  ไปรับจ้างทั่วไปตามต่างจังหวัด  จนกระทั่งไปอาศัยอยู่กับอาที่อำเภอ สัตหีบ จังหวัดชลบุรี  

ช่วยทำขนมหวาน  เช่น  โรตีกรอบ  โรตีใส่นม แล้วนำไปขายที่บริเวณวัดหลวงพ่ออี๋  ในแต่ละวันเมื่อขายขนมเสร็จแล้ว

อำเภอพระนครศรีอยุธยา  ทำโรตีสายไหมใส่กล่องไม้สะพาย  ถีบจักรยานคู่ใจเร่ขายไปทั่ว  ในสมัยนั้นคนซื้อจะนำเหรียญสลึงมา

หย่อนลงในช่องที่เจาะไว้  เข็มที่หน้าปัดซึ่งมีตัวเลขเขียนไว้จะหมุนไป  เมื่อเข็มหยุดที่เลขใดก็จะได้จำนวนชิ้นเท่านั้น 

เป็นที่สนุกสนานของคนซื้อ  บังเปียขายอยู่หลายปี  กระทั่งในปี  พ.ศ.  ๒๕๒๐  ได้แต่งงานกับนางมั่น เป็นชาวโคราช  

มีบุตรชาย  ๓  คน และผู้หญิง  ๒  คน  จึงคิดที่จะสร้างครอบครัวให้เป็นปึกแผ่นกว่าที่เป็นอยู่ ต่อมาได้ย้ายไปเช่าบ้านไป

อยู่ในตัวเมืองอยุธยา  ริมถนนอู่ทอง  เส้นทางไปโรงพยาบาลพระนครศรีอยุธยา ช่วยกันทำโรตีสายไหมขายเป็นอาชีพ

จึงชักชวนพี่น้อง  จำนวน  ๖  คน ให้มายึดอาชีพทำโรตีสายไหมขาย  ทำให้ตระกูลแสงอรุณขยายกิจการกระจายไปทั่วถนนอู่ทอง  

และขยายวงกว้างไปตามเส้นทางสายเอเชีย  ถนนมิตรภาพ  ผ่านไปมาจะเห็นร่มกางสีสวยข้างทางพร้อมป้ายปักโรตีสายไหม

อยุธยา สร้างรายได้ให้กับครอบครัว  ญาติ  ไม่หวงวิชาถ่ายทอดด้วยความเต็มใจ จึงมีลูกศิษย์แยกตัวไปประกอบอาชีพนี้มากมาย  

ปัจจุบันได้รับเชิญไปสอนการทำโรตีสายไหมให้กับหน่วยงานทั้งภาครัฐ  และภาคเอกชน  เช่นฝึกอาชีพให้กับผู้ต้องขังในเรือนจำ

จังหวัด  ตามห้างสรรพสินค้าที่มีการจัดงานต่าง ๆ พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอพระองค์เจ้าโสมสวลีพระวรราชาทินัดดามาตุเสด็จไปเปิด
