ตำรวจในประเทศไทย คือ เจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐหรือเจ้าพนักงานที่สังกัดสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติซึ่งเป็นส่วนราชการไม่สังกัดสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี กระทรวงหรือทบวง มีฐานะเป็นกรม และอยู่ในบังคับบัญชาของนายกรัฐมนตรี ตำรวจนั้นมีหน้าที่ตรวจตรารักษาความสงบ จับกุม และปราบปรามผู้กระทำผิดกฎหมาย เป็นผู้ที่มีหน้าที่ความรับผิดชอบอันใหญ่หลวงในการดูแลคุ้มครอง ให้เกิดความสงบสุขแก่พลเมืองของประเทศ

ตาม พ.ร.บ.ตำรวจแห่งชาติ พ.ศ.2547 ได้กำหนดอำนาจหน้าที่ตำรวจไว้ใน

บททั่วไป
มาตรา ๖ สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติเป็นส่วนราชการมีฐานะเป็นนิติบุคคลอยู่ในบังคับบัญชาของนายกรัฐมนตรี และมีอำนาจหน้าที่ดังต่อไปนี้
(๑) รักษาความปลอดภัยสำหรับองค์พระมหากษัตริย์ พระราชินี พระรัชทายาทผู้สำเร็จราชการแทนพระองค์ พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ ผู้แทนพระองค์ และพระราชอาคันตุกะ
(๒) ดูแลควบคุมและกำกับการปฏิบัติงานของข้าราชการตำรวจซึ่งปฏิบัติการตามประมวลกฎหมายวิธีพิจารณาความอาญา
(๓) ป้องกันและปราบปรามการกระทำความผิดทางอาญา
(๔) รักษาความสงบเรียบร้อย ความปลอดภัยของประชาชนและความมั่นคงของราชอาณาจักร
(๕) ปฏิบัติการอื่นใดตามที่กฎหมายกำหนดให้เป็นอำนาจหน้าที่ของข้าราชการตำรวจหรือสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ
(๖) ช่วยเหลือการพัฒนาประเทศตามที่นายกรัฐมนตรีมอบหมาย
(๗) ปฏิบัติการอื่นใดเพื่อส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนให้การปฏิบัติการตามอำนาจหน้าที่ตาม(๑)(๒)(๓)(๔)หรือ(๕)เป็นไปอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
ในกรณีที่มีกฎหมายกำหนดความผิดทางอาญาขึ้นสำหรับการกระทำใดเป็นการเฉพาะและตกอยู่ภายใต้อำนาจหน้าที่ของข้าราชการตำรวจหรือสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ
ตาม(๓)(๔)หรือ(๕)จะตราพระราชกฤษฎีกาโอนอำนาจหน้าที่ตาม(๓)(๔)หรือ(๕)เฉพาะในส่วนที่เกี่ยวกับความผิดทางอาญาดังกล่าวทั้งหมดหรือบางส่วน
ให้เป็นอำนาจหน้าที่ของหน่วยงาน หรือพนักงานเจ้าหน้าที่อื่นใดก็ได้ ในกรณีเช่นนั้นให้ข้าราชการตำรวจและสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาิติพ้นจากอำนาจหน้าที่ดังกล่าวทั้งหมด
หรือบางส่วน และให้ถือว่าพนักงานเจ้าหน้าที่ของหน่วยงานตามที่กำหนดในพระราชกฤษฎีกาดังกล่าวเป็นพนักงานฝ่ายปกครองหรือตำรวจ พนักงานสอบสวน หรือพนักงาน
ฝ่ายปกครองหรือตำรวจชั้นผู้ใหญ่ ตามประมวลกฎหมายวิธีพิจารณาความอาญาแล้วแต่กรณี ทั้งนี้ ตามที่กำหนดในพระราชกฤษฎีกาดังกล่าว
