การศึกษานี้เป็นการศึกษาการเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการทำงานของการก่อสร้างระบบรางรถไฟฟ้า กรณีศึกษา โครงการก่อสร้างระบบรางรถไฟฟ้า ของบริษัท เอบีซี จำกัด (มหาชน) ซึ่งเป็นผู้รับเหมาก่อสร้างทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการทำงานของอุตสาหกรรมก่อสร้างของไทย และศึกษาการวางแผนและควบคุมงานก่อสร้างให้มีประสิทธิภาพและสามารถนำมาประยุกต์กับโครงการการก่อสร้างอื่นๆได้ โดยทำการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลที่ได้จากการค้นคว้าข้อมูลของบริษัท และจากแหล่งค้นคว้าต่างๆ เช่น เอกสารรายงานความก้าวหน้าประจำเดือน งานวิจัย วิทยานิพนธ์ และเว็บไซต์ที่เกี่ยวข้อง และได้จากการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth Interview) กับหัวหน้าแผนกและพนักงานโครงการนำมาวิเคราะห์โดยใช้เทคนิคการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพ แล้วนำแผนภาพสาเหตุและผล (Cause And Effect Diagram) มาใช้วิเคราะห์สาเหตุของปัญหา โดยใช้หลักการของ Lean Construction คือ การวางแผนการก่อสร้างเพื่อป้องกันการผิดพลาด ลดการสูญเสียในกระบวนการก่อสร้าง
ผลการศึกษาพบว่า (1) เมื่อมีการวางแผนและควบคุมงานก่อสร้างของโครงการที่ดีจะช่วยลดปัญหาที่อาจเกิดขึ้นในระหว่างการก่อสร้างได้ และการจัดความสัมพันธ์และลำดับของกิจกรรมก่อสร้าง จะช่วยลดขั้นตอนที่ซ้ำซ้อน ลดเวลาในการก่อสร้าง และสามารถดำเนินการก่อสร้างได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ และ (2) เมื่อมีการอบรมแรงงานก่อสร้างในขั้นตอนการทำงานทุกๆเช้า จะทำให้แรงงานก่อสร้างมีความเข้าใจในขั้นตอนการก่อสร้างและมีความปลอดภัย และ (3) เมื่อมีการจัดการระบบการเบิกใช้วัสดุของโครงการให้เป็นไปตามคู่มือคุณภาพ จะทำให้ลดข้อผิดพลาดและสามารถตรวจสอบปริมาณวัสดุก่อสร้างได้
