พจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. 2542 ได้ให้ความหมายคำว่า “ความสามัคคี” ว่า“สามัคคี หมายถึง ความพร้อมเพรียงกัน ความกลมเกลียวเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกัน ไม่ทะเลาะเบาะแว้ง วิวาทบาดหมางกันและกัน” ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพระราชทานความหมายคำว่า“สามัคคี” ที่ลึกซึ้งกว่า ว่า “…ความ สามัคคีควรจะมีความหมายที่ลึกซึ้งกว่านั้นอีกด้วย เช่น ควรจะหมายถึงความพร้อมเพรียงของทุกฝ่ายทุกคนที่มีความสำนึกแน่ชัดในความรับ ผิดชอบที่จะพึงใช้ความรู้ความคิด ความสามารถ ตลอดจนคุณสมบัติทุก ๆ ประการของตน ให้ประกอบพร้อมเข้าด้วยกัน และให้เกื้อกูลส่งเสริมกัน เพื่อสร้างสรรค์สิ่งที่เป็นสาระแก่นสารและที่เป็นประโยชน์เป็นความเจริญต่อ ส่วนรวมและเพื่อนมนุษย์...” จากความหมายดัง กล่าว จึงสรุปได้ว่า ความสามัคคีเป็นความพร้อมเพรียงกันของทุกฝ่ายทุกคนในความรับผิดชอบ ที่จะพึง ใช้ความรู้ ความคิด ความสามารถ ตลอดจนคุณสมบัติทุก ๆ ประการของตน ให้ประกอบพร้อมเข้าด้วยกัน และให้เกื้อกูลส่งเสริมกัน เพื่อสร้างสรรค์สิ่งที่เป็นสาระแก่นสารและที่เป็นประโยชน์เป็นความเจริญต่อ ส่วนรวมและเพื่อนมนุษย์การที่จะเกิดความสามัคคีได้ในการกระทำต้องเริ่มจาก จิตใจ ถ้าทุกคนมีความสามัคคีเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกันแล้ว ประเทศชาติย่อมคลาดแคล้วจากภัยของศัตรู และตั้งมั่นมีความสุขสมบูรณ์อยู่ได้ หากขาดความสามัคคี ไม่รักใคร่ไว้วางใจกัน ปราศจากความปรองดองเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกันการดำเนินงานย่อมจะไม่สำเร็จพื้น ฐานที่สำคัญที่สุดของการจรรโลงความสามัคคีกลมเกลียวกันให้บังเกิดขึ้นในจิต ใจของคนไทยทุกคนเพื่อตอบแทนคุณแผ่นดินและดำรงแผ่นดินไทยให้เป็นปึกแผ่นตลอด ไป คือ การรู้จักหน้าที่ของตนเอง ในหมู่สมาชิกของสังคม และประเทศนั้น ๆ กล่าวคือ ผู้ใดมีภาระหน้าที่อันใดอยู่ก็เร่งกระทำให้สำเร็จลุล่วงไปให้ทันการณ์ ทันเวลา โดยเต็มกำลัง ความรู้ ความสามารถ และโดยบริสุทธิ์จริงใจ ก่อให้เกิดสันติสุขทั้งจุดย่อย ๆ คือ ชีวิต และจุดใหญ่ที่เริ่มจากคนสองคนขึ้นไป เช่น การครองเรือนของสามี ภรรยา เป็นต้น การที่สามีภรรยาจะรักและอยู่ครองเรือน ครองสุขกันได้ตลอดกาลนานนั้น ย่อมขึ้นอยู่กับความสำนึกถึงหน้าที่ของตน และทำหน้าที่ของตนให้ดี ผลของการทำหน้าที่ของแต่ละฝ่ายด้วยดีเช่นนี้ ความสุข ความสงบภายในครอบครัวก็จะเกิดขึ้น จากครอบครัวก็กระจายออกไปถึงสังคม ชาติอันเป็นส่วนรวม ตราบใดที่คนในชาติตระหนักถึงหน้าที่ของตนและเคารพหน้าที่ของคนอื่นต่างคน ต่างพยายามทำหน้าที่ของตนให้ดี ตามสมควรแก่ฐานะของตน ความสามัคคีก็จะเกิดขึ้นในชาติแผ่นดินมีความมั่นคง ความสงบสุข ซึ่งก็เป็นการทำความดีเพื่อแผ่นดินอันยิ่งใหญ่ อานิสงส์ ของความสามัคคีนี้ ท่านกล่าวไว้ว่า เป็นบ่อเกิดแห่งความสุข ความเจริญ เป็นเหตุแห่งความสำเร็จในกิจการงานต่าง ๆ การงานอันเกินกำลังที่คนคนเดียวจะทำได้ เช่น การก่อสร้างบ้านเรือน กิจกรรมหรือโครงการต่าง ๆ ต้องอาศัยความสามัคคีเป็นที่ตั้ง ปลวกเป็นเพียงสัตว์ตัวเล็กๆแต่ในความเล็กนั้น ปลวกกลับสามารถสร้างจอมปลวกอันเข้มแข็งใหญ่โตเท่าภูเขาลูกเล็ก ๆ ก็เพราะปลวกเป็นสัตว์ที่รู้จักช่วยเหลือกัน รู้จักความสามัคคี ทำงานกันเป็นทีม และมีความรู้สึกรับผิดชอบต่อ
