เมื่อวันที่ ๑๐ มกราคม ๒๕๒๗ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานพระราชดำริให้พิจารณาวางโครงการและก่อสร้างระบบชลประทานตามลำน้ำสาขาต่าง ๆ ของแม่น้ำปิง ในเขตพื้นที่อำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอฮอด จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และอำเภอบ้านโฮ่ง จังหวัดลำพูน เพื่อจัดหาน้ำสำหรับการอุปโภค - บริโภค และการเกษตรให้แก่ ราษฎร พร้อมทั้งอนุรักษ์ป่าต้นน้ำเหนืออ่างเก็บน้ำต่าง ๆ ให้ มีสภาพสมบูรณ์ ตลอดจนจัดสรรพื้นที่ป่าละเมาะให้ราษฎรทำการเกษตร

วัตถุประสงค์โครงการ :
