จากการค้นพบซากโบราณสถานและจากหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่ค้นพบในเมืองศรีเทพ ทำให้น่า เชื่อว่าเพชรบูรณ์มีอายุไม่ต่ำกว่า ๑,๐๐๐ ปี และเป็นเมืองที่ขอมสร้างขึ้นในระยะเวลาใกล้เคียงกับเมืองพิมาย ลพบุรี และจันทบุรี เพื่อเป็นจุดเผยแพร่วัฒนธรรมของขอมไปสู่อาณาจักรทวาราวดี ปัจจุบันยังมีซากเมือง กำแพงเมือง และพระปรางค์ปรากฏอยู่ในเขตอำเภอศรีเทพ ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากอำเภอเมืองเพชรบูรณ์ไปทางทิศ ตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ประมาณ ๑๒๐ กิโลเมตร บริเวณที่ตั้งเมืองเป็นที่ราบ มีกำแพงดินสูงรอบเมือง ด้านนอก กำแพงมีคูเมือง ภายในเมืองมีพระปรางค์ ซากเทวสถาน รูปเทพารักษ์ พระนารายณ์ รูปยักษ์สลักด้วยศิลา แลงเช่นเดียวกับเมืองพิมาย ลพบุรี และจันทบุรี จึงเป็นหลักฐานแสดงให้เห็นว่าเป็นฝีมือของขอมที่ได้รับ อารยธรรมจากอินเดีย
