ตามที่คณะรัฐมนตรีมีมติเมื่อวันที่ 27 กรกฎาคม 2547 กำหนดให้ทุกวันอาทิตย์เป็นวันครอบครัวแข็งแรง (Healthy Family Day) ของสังคมไทย และมติคณะรัฐมนตรีเมื่อวันที่ 4 ตุลาคม 2548 นายกรัฐมนตรีมอบหมายให้รองนายกรัฐมนตรี (นายสุวัจน์ ลิปตพัลลภ) และรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการพัฒนาสังคมและความมั่นคงของมนุษย์ ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับการทำวันอาทิตย์ให้เป็นวันครอบครัว เพื่อเสริมสร้างความเข้มแข็งของสถาบันครอบครัว และขอความร่วมมือกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ดำเนินการจัดทำโครงการ กิจกรรม "วันอาทิตย์เป็นวันครอบครัว" นั้น
